Hi Sophia

My son has the 118i M Sport in blue. I have to say its really nice. I would go to a dealer and have a sit in the different cars. Go for a test drive Take your dad my son did so he didn't sign up for something he couldn't afford.

Have a look at the Audi A1 mu daughter has one they are nice too.

Hi
Thank you! May I ask how much was the car? Was it on finance? I am planning to get it on finance. I am hoping to deposit 5k and hopefully less than £200 per month? Is that possible? I can pay a little more deposit though. I don't know why but I and scared buying because I don't really know anyone who is good with finance and cars in general lol frown

Have a look at the Honest John website, the Car by Car guides are very helpful in explaining the features and foibles of cars.

Newest version versus older version here. Changes are subtle tho and both are current generation.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.carwow.co.uk/bl...

If you saw a 2008 car it's definitely the first generation. Although with BMWs changes are more evolutionary , rather than revolutionary so you can , even sober and with 20/20 , easily be confused. wink

If you go to BMWs website you can see all the different 1 series iterations listed and you can build one for yourself . I think most are called sport now , apart from the specials with M prefix. Older ones were differentiated with SE or M Sport , the latter most notably having sports seats and suspension.

The numbers 116 and 118 relate to engine size. They may have the same engine capacity , if so it's a difference in power that separates them ; logically the 118 is the more powerful.

I've had petrol and diesel Sport trim 1 series models as loan cars and really didn't like how they drove. For a more fun car, still within the BMW family, I'd suggest a Mini Cooper.

I don't know anything about buying on finance. But If you register with the site bmw baby.net you'll be able to track down a well thought of guy called Tony (TRL). Definitely , if you are thinking of a 2017 (new) model he can give you a finance quote.

The 1 series changed shape a few times, with the most significant change in 2012 where it became a noticeably larger car. They do 3 door or 5 door, or the 1 series Coupe which was a 2 door hard top or convertible.

Many of the cars if badged 116, 118, 120, might be actually a 2.0ltr engine, in either style car. Also the cars halfway through their shape life usually receive a facelift which is to refresh the looks in someway, referred to as LCI (life cycle improvement) Engines in the diesel are like this, but....the later car in an ED model for instance, if in a 1.6d, it will be a 1.6ltr engine. This is actually noticeable when driving. It is confusing and many general garages are oblivious.

If you personally, don't generally notice the changes in style with the models you've seen, then it might actually help you buy what you experience as a nice condition car without being, or becoming, hung up on wanting a specific model because you recognise it's place in the range as many people do.

For £200pcm you can get a nice car, considering that with a deposit, you can by (rent) an M140i for £299

As most main dealers offer PCP schemes, frequently with a service plan for 2 or 3 years, on new or used cars you could a lot worse than look in a main agent before going elsewhere just because you might automatically perceive those other sellers to offer a better deal. You could find yourself in a terrible finance deal leaving you tied into a car. Also the main dealers will only sell a car with main dealer history, so if you buy a car elsewhere which most likely won't have exclusive BMW history, and later want to get one from a main dealer, you might struggle to part exchange it, as they won't be able to sell it. :-)

Thank you. So anything before 2015 is the old facelift, and anything from 2015-current is the new facelift? So if I get a 2015 reg plate is the new facelift BMW? Also there are no new facelift during 2015-2017? Also the link you provided. The right-hand side BMW has 2 bums (the exhaust - whatever its called lmao) and the left BMW has 1. Why is that? Are the 2 bums more expensive? Don't ask why I call them bums just poped up straight out my head. biggrin

Sorry if I'm asking alot of stupid questions. I just want to make sure I get everything right. When I do buy the car I will most likely be with my dad and I can tell you know he is stupid like me haha silly

edit - I forgot to ask are we talking about '15' or the '65' 2015 plate? Which one is the new facelift one? I want to make sure I get everything right before I buy lol.

edit - please someone tell me the correct name for the bums lol idea

I'd say "rear," or if prefixing two of the rear features i.e. lights and (exhaust) pipes, I'd say "tail."
On the white one, in the link, look at the rear and see how the tail lights extend into the hatch (boot), they are also redder with only a little white. That's the easiest way to tell the newest (facelift) version.

With a 15 plate, you will still see some older versions as the cars will have been have been built maybe several months before they were registered.

I had a quick look at the used cars on sale on BMW's website and the first 15 plate to be of the new style was registered in May.

The two tail pipes together denote a 120 model, so yes it's more powerful. There's also a 125 model. And if you really wanted to go fast a M140i (previously a M135i) which has it's two tail pipes one on each side.

BMW does make some changes outside the main facelift, but I don't have the knowledge of the 1 series to determine what if anything would be different between a 2015 and 2017 model.

As others have said, the model numbers mean the power of the car 114 being the least powerful to 140 being the most powerful. an 'i' on the end meaning petrol and 'd' meaning diesel. If you see an X-Drive badge, that means it's 4 wheel drive. M Sport is a trim level which will probably give you sports seats, suspension and a few extra shiny bits and bobs.

They changed shape in 2011-2012 from the mark 1 to the mark 2.

Most now come with Bluetooth audio, you'll probably want that for Spotify and the like, but just make sure.

The LCI was from very late 2015 so on a 120d or 320d, 420d the exhaust went from a single outlet to dual (two next to each other, the M140i has dual (1 each side)

Since I think January 2016 all the BMW's had Nav (Navigation) which is worth having. The I Drive changed in 2016 too which instead of listing options, there are horizontal windows that resemble apps to select and choose settings,

There are many options, and some are required in order to realise others, so be cautious not to get the first car you see and watch the salesman doesn't push you into a car that suits him to sell just because he has it in stock. Wait for the car that has the specification that works for you.

M Sport has different bumpers front and rear, and many will have M Sport suspension, some people however, deselect this option to avoid having a firm ride, and one thing to consider is if looking at an X Drive, they don't and can't have M Sport suspension. This option is 10mm lower than standard. You can also find SE models which someone might have ordered M Sport suspension for, mad isn't it? An SE usually has flat style seats, where an M Sport always has bolstered seats and are so much nicer.

An M Sport standard cloth interior is actually very nice, and arguably nicer than leather, but the other coverings don't look so special in fabric.

I had an 120d M Sport with the sport plus option, this is also a great option which gives you much better brakes with blue brake calipers, sun protection glass, and Harmon Kardon stereo, it also had sport plus auto which has an eight speed automatic with paddle change on the steering wheel too, such a nice car to drive and was quicker than a manual version.

Anyway, loads to choose from, metallic paint was an extra, and not cheap, so consider plain colours as often worth less.

Hi! Thank you
Navigation? Isnt that satnav or whatever people call it these days? i thought all the new bmws have that already installed? isnt that the little lcd computer in the middle of the car? is the navigation compulsory or is it only installed in 2016 cars?

Nav is the navigation (iDrive), seems Nav became standard in September 2015. Why does the dealer seem to highlight it on a 2017 model? Probably because they see Nav as desirable and a selling point on cars. They're full of waffle these sales execs wink

I don't know how competitively priced this car is, what I'd suggest is to have a look around on the BMW Approved Used Website and compare prices / spec. You can limit your choices to a geographical area if you don't wish to travel too far.

http://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/

If you are keen on this car, remember the sale price is open to negotiation. It's a common enough car that you should go for a better deal than the one offered.

I don't know much about finance, but you should weight up whether it's better than getting a low interest loan and paying for the car outright.

Seems with this deal, you pay about 11k£ and then have to stump up another 9k or have no car and have to start again.

Also, is diesel right for you? I don't think they're worth it unless you do high miles.

iDrive does allow for the parking sensor graphic, plus lots of information about car, the servicing etc. So it's pretty good.
