E91 Straight Six Bearding
Discussion
I bit the bullet and bought some OEM brakes from Cotswold yesterday. Slightly more expensive than the Brembos but hopefully worth it. Haven't opened them yet but will post any identification marks I find which help track down any potential cheaper suppliers.
Just a note to say I ordered and paid yesterday afternoon and they were delivered at 11am. Cotswold BMW

I always thought there were physical parts differences with the version in the 125/325i that limited power, rather than it just being map differences?
Seems to depend on which model you have - the 125i/130i were identical, but the 325i/330i did have differences (better intake in the 330i). And just to add to the confusion, the US Market 128i had the same intake as the 325i....
Our 125i has similar variance with the 228i, 230i etc. And then there are the Performance BMW remaps.

Could you get your engine number Bodhi? I'll find mine on the 330.
From http://www.bmwarchive.org/m-code/n52b30u1.htmlIt looks to be the N52B30U1.
As for the 330i...um there seems to be a little bit of choice

Looks like the N52B30O0?

The N52B25 is a different unit.
ETA It looks like America got the 3 litre for the 325.
Also, that database suggests a 3 litre N53 engine in the 325 for a period and then a 2.5 N53.
Looks like the 125i E82 is something of a little hidden gem from that perspective.

The n52b25 is a ~2490cc and the n52b30 is a 2996cc.

N53 has never had anything other than a 2996cc displacement but was available in 4 power outputs. 205, 218, 259, 270 bhp IIRC. The 3rd being used in the f10 528i 2996cc before it was replaced with the f10 530i 2996 272ps.

Extra power seems to be everywhere, with a noticeable kick past 5000 rpm. Well worth doing if you know anyone with a 125i. I think the same can be done with a 325i, but there is a manifold swap involved as well.
I don't think it applies to the 325i. As I understand it the N52 in a 325i is a 2.5 litre one, if a 325i had a 3.0 litre engine it's got the N53 which is a different thing altogether.
But weirdly the 125i has a 3 litre N52 that is detuned.

I've decided to sell my 335i but not sure how or when. Need to get it booked in for some bits and pieces before sale then its all fine and dandy.
Prefer the 550i?Decided to sell my 335i as just not gelling with it. The 5 is such a better all round car with better seat, seating position, steering and general feel even if you try to ignore the massive v8. Ok the smaller 3 is better to throw around but i dont really do that too much anyway.
... back in the room. The 3 is a good car but i think the 5 is difficult to beat. My estate car is my kid carrier, my stuff mover and my bike wagon - although i mountain bike maybe 2 or 3 times a year now if that. I bought the 335i intending to sell the 550i but i can't part with it. The 335i is probably quicker and uses less fuel but thats not the point is it. I can't quite put my finger on it but out of the 2 i want to drive the 550i more. And i guess that's all that matters.

Understandable. The 550i is a rare beast. And a very accomplished one at that with a proper boot. Good luck with the sale!Decided to sell my 335i as just not gelling with it. Here's a few pics of my E91 330i SE
Its a 2006 N52 with a 6MT.
It was first registered to BMW in 2006 then owned by a retired bloke since 2007 right up until a couple of weeks ago when I bought it. It's covered a grand total of 23k miles with a FSH. Its absolutely mint and as tight as a drum. It's engine is a cracker (Ive just sold my F10 M5 and dont feel short changed)!
Ive put new rubber on as the originals were perished after 12 years.
