Yup OE is Pierberg. My original pump that I took off at 188k miles (preventative maintenance, no actual failure) clearly has a Pierberg logo on it.

Thanks chaps

Mine is at 57k and no signs of faults but the thought of being stranded somewhere is the biggest issue with these electric pumps I think?

Have to admit, I was a little worried. When the yellow light came on, then about a minute later the red. Car drove fine for the 2 miles to home but I wouldn't think you'd get much time if it failed on a motorway.
Axle stands and lay down mat at hand once the parts arrive tomorrow....

Its a bad design idea from BMW to have no water temp gauge imho. The lack of an oil dipstick ain't great eaither

To me, cooling and lubrication are absolutely critical to an engine and to rely on electronic monitoring only is a little short sighted given the huge implications.

Agree. And why not have a basic mechanical pump to provide a baseline level of cooling?

I must admit I am amazed at how fast my f10 can start pumping out warm air and that's presumably in part due to the pump but I'd happily just use the arris warmers instead

Presumably there's some small efficiency benefit to using the electric pump, plus its speed can easily be varied to respond to temperature changes. It's annoying that there's little to no warning of impending failure however, and the lifespan of the pump is not predictable at all.

I fitted my cheeky Chinese VANOS solenoids today, hoping for the best. It's noticeable that the ports don't have nearly as much of the nice scalloping round the edges as the originals, I wonder what marginal gain that will lose me. rolleyes

I also like how easy it is to bleed the system with an electric pump!

It takes a lot longer to run the bleed cycle than bleed an old M54. On the other hand mechanical water pumps can also fail suddenly without warning.

Not sure about the T&Cs but if anyone is buying car parts on ebay, PREPCAR gets you 15% off this week.

EDIT: Looks like it's selected sellers only though, so not sure how useful it is.

Fitted the pump and t stat tonight. Axle stands and hand tools.... Sadly the workshop is full of cars being readied for Goodwood so homey job it was... Still have to fill it with water and put the roll bar and tray up, but 2.5 hrs so far.
Jury is out on the plastic Tstat but did give me a fight getting the hoses on!

I have both the Torque app and a professional obd2 reader. Torque shows the temp.

Got myself an ELM327 and the Torque-lite app. Quite handy. Well worth the few quid.

All done, changed the oil while up in the air.
Bleeding the system was different to what I expected, pump ran for 3 or 4 minutes rather than the 12 it states elsewhere.
Ran it up and sat idling for 10 mins while I rechecked with the torque app. 97deg nice and steady. Not too bad if its the first pump just shy of 120k.

Has anyone experienced a dull rattle/knock that isn't a ticking lifter or belt driven component that starts a few minutes after cold start and disappears after about 5 minutes? It can only be heard outside the car or with the windows open.

Yes, my Z4 Coupe does it sometimes (3 litre N52 engine), although my 135K miles E91 325i doesn't. confused

But the consensus on z4forum is the same as on e90post - some do it, some don't but it doesn't seem to be a problem!

Folks, I know it's in a different car but I've been getting slightly concerned about the Oil Consumption in my N52. For most of it's life it's been getting through a litre in about 4 - 5000 miles or so, but recently it seems to have gone up to 1 litre every 2000 miles or so.

Car has 126k on it - should I be worried?
