I've never seen a coolant temperature gauge dance all over the place, they're well damped.

I find it a bit annoying not having one in the e65. Always handy to see if there's a thermostat issue.

I've had 7 Bmw's and I don't think any of them have had a coolant temperature gauge. It's crazy in fairness, but maybe I'm just old fashioned and it's the modern way of doing things.

The reason for not fitting the temperature gauge iirc is that it would be dancing all over the place when you drive, so people would go into bmw asking about it. It runs the engine hotter or cooler depending on whether it’s in an “economy” mode or a “performance” mode. TBH, most car temp gauges only tell you if it’s under temp, at temp or overheating anyway.
Not convinced that is the reason - E92s and E93s have a temperature gauge as does my E86 with an N52 engine and it doesn't dance all over the place! Apart from when the pump died of course. mad
Are these not oil temperature gauges though? I thought they either had the swingy mpg need or an oil temp gauge rather than coolant/engine temp.

On a hot day, under repeated load the oil temp gauge in my 335i definitely moves.

Mine too moves between 100deg and 120deg depending on driving style and weather, but it moves quite slowly and I expect it too. If the water temp gauge moved about, most would panic I think. I can't think of a car I have ever driven with an accurate water temp gauge.

Do some of the regular cars have an oil temperature gauge? I thought it was just the M cars.

Certainly the case with the e46 and e39 era.

Recently replaced a sticking rear caliper and used the car (2006 E91) on the motorway for the first time since the swap yesterday and the cruise control seems to be buggered irked

I get a graphic like this when I try to turn it on:

Is this likely to be just coincidence or could it be related to the caliper swap?

As you say, rare. But surely not worth £9k at that mileage?

Did you snag the wheel speed sensor? (Though I think this would give other warnings with the DSC?)

I'm not sure on the E92/E93, but my E86 is definitely coolant temperature - but at least it has some sort of gauge! laugh

What sort is it? Is this a 2 door thing? I've got an E90 330i, and it's got the mpgometer, but no temperature gauge frown

The E46 saloon I had before had a temperature gauge, though I've no idea what it was actually measuring, and the needle only ever seemed to have 2 positions anyway.

(This is all a bit lame, really. Would be nice to know when the car is at least somewhat warmed up. But the iDrive oil level meter doesn't seem to work at all when the engine is cold, so I go by that if I'm unsure: no oil level reading = E46 left segment, some oil level reading = E46 centre segment. Presumably E46 right segment corresponds to one of the engine warning lights in the E90? - anyway, won't be any more or less accurate, I figure.)

I guess if you want one you want one. There aren't many to choose from.

My mate has an F21 m135i and he says you can get to the water temp by fiddling in the menu. It sounds deeply buried but there if you know how.

No, my E86 has a coolant temperature gauge - but "M" models have an oil temperature gauge! Like the 335is. laugh The clue is in the little oil can graphic above the gauge!

Yeah it'll have an oil can if it's an oil temperature one.

I know the E86 has a water temp gauge, but I didn't think any E9x series had one. Either oil temp or mpg swingometer.

Not too sure. Strangely, on the return journey today, the cruise worked again, then stopped working again. Then started working again after I stopped for petrol, then stopped working again... irked

Might be totally irrelevant, but have you got parking sensors that work intermittently? Im sure I had the cruise cut on me once when another car got quite close at 70 mph - Im wondering if it could be linked to a failing sensor that triggers the cruise on/off. Im not absolutely sure but worth a thought. If it were abs / speed sensor it would light up with ABS/ DSC etc as they would be affected.
