£630 a year tax would definitely be off-putting for a £6K car, although I think later 335is are in a lower band.

I'm willing to pay it for my Z4M Coupe, but could only justify it for a 3 Series if it was an M3!
Indeed. Mine is just over £300 a year.
Probably the same as my 330i, but then sometimes Road Tax can be a drop in the ocean. thumbup

Changed the plugs and coils on my 335i this morning which went well until I got to cylinder six. The first five looked like this

Unfortunately plug six, looked like this

And was accompanied by the smell of super unleaded so it looks like injector six is on the way out.

With the threat of the cam ledges still a possibility, I’m not sure I can stomach the bill for a set of index 12 injectors, so I’m going to try a good used one.

Looks like you've been lucky to avoid a hydrolock!

Had a look under my car for the first time ever, and noticed a heat shield that looks like it's seen better days. Looks like the highlighted area is supposed to be held in place by a washer, but that part of the shield has corroded into nothing.

Do I need to worry about this? It is very loose, though not (yet?) obviously loose enough to fall off or make contact with anything.

There's another washer holding it up towards the rear of the car, which looks like it's still good.

I fitted the 2 OEM headlight washer replacements yesterday. A cinch on the n/s but o/s required the Dremel to have a word with a few of the screws in the arch liner pieces. Still, they now work perfectly, don't leak and fully retract back into the bumper.

Was watching a few Sreten vids Fri night and ended up giving everything a bit of a scrub hehe

Also took a look at the driving lights which I knew were a little corroded. Err, yeah they're utterly screwed

The housing seems to be aluminium which I assume they've played. But the alu is completely corroded all over so has blown the coating off. Not sure what reaction has gone on for the housings to have corroded like that.

Did a tip run today and thought I could smell smoke so pulled over for a look. Gave it some revs and sure enough there was smoke coming from towards the rear of the block. I'd guess it's oil that's leaked on to the exhaust. So will keep my eyes on it, and hope it was just a bit of a spill from when the cam cover gasket was done.

Is there anything else in that area that it could be?

I’d hope that it’s just a bit of spilled oil or cleaner etc. How long ago was it changed?

Yeah, I’d bang a used one in too. Note the flow numbers down and code it in with INPA. Or have BMW tell you to stick it when you want to use your warranty. frown

Remove that small washer, and use a larger one in conjunction with it to hold the heat shield up. They do this eventually. Galvanic corrosion.

Nice stuff. I always want to clean like that when I get in there, but the lure of a cup of tea and biscuit afterwards is too strong. hehe

For the oil smoke, I’d say leftover oil. Keep an eye on it, and if it still leaks take it back.

Popped out to get the slignment sorted after having the rack done. Car back to driving perfectly. Dropped by the garage that did the cam cover gasket and they took a look and confirmed it's still weeping, so it's booked to go back in.

My LCI 2009 N54 auto was not 630, it was more like 350ish or whatever is the next one down.

That’s exactly what I’m doing; a working index 9 is on the way.

I’ll get a new coupler etc ordered too.

Not sure if the right thread - but trying to track down the correct ATE part number, for Ceramic pads on an E90/91 335i. Front & rear pads.

AutoDoc is throwing up 2 options with similar PNs, but at £100 a pop I can't be bothered to order both sets and then return one of them!

TIA

Get the part numbers off RealOEM and use those on Autodoc

These are what I installed on my 335i last year (I still need to do the rears).

Item number 13.0470-7237.2

If you play Autodoc roulette you should get them for a bit less. I paid £70 for mine.

Interesting, the BMW part number from RealOEM led me to ATE number 13.0470-7238.2 .. AUTODOC says that both options fit however.

I’ll probably swap to the number you used as then I know it’s 100% going to fit. Leave it in my basket on the app for a week & then usually get a nice offer come through

I was going to suggest looking it up on ATE's own parts catalogue as well. I always do that when ordering from Autodoc. Rcent example is the driving/fog lights where Autodoc lists 2 Hella part numbers with different prices - check on Hella's catalogue only identifies one number so no idea what the other is!

This is what Autodoc recommend for my 335d:

The other part links to the earlier version of the pads which have been superseded by the newer one. Both will fit. 335i/d use the same brakes as do LCI 330ds.

I try that and never get the offers.

Monday’s seem to be the cheap day and then costs go up over the week.

The ceramic pads seem worth the extra; bite well and the lack of brake dust is brilliant.

Slightly embarrassing question for you all but... do VANOS solenoids have a direct impact on the idle?

I still haven't got around to properly addressing my somewhat erratic idle, a vacuum leak and/or dodgy MAF are still my favourite theories.

It did occur to me that the cheapo solenoids I fitted about 5 years ago could be failing. I was trying not to spend much at the time so they were ebay specials. I don't have any codes, but could they be a factor?

They could be, but hard to say. Have you had the vacuum lines smoke-tested for any leaks?

I always recommend cleaning out the Vanos filters also - easy job to DIY and eliminates another variable for £0.00 outlay.
