Finding VIN from registration plate...
Discussion
My understanding is that BMW were using a VRM data lookup for their warranty extension microsite, which is a pay-per-click type of affair (although obviously we're talking pennies per click on such a large website). They couldn't lift the data from their own mainframe as this is unavailable at some points in the week, hence used a third party data provider to keep the site functioning 24/7.
Nevertheless, I'm hardly surprised they have decided to stop displaying VINs and hence reduce their burn rate, as so many people were abusing it just to find out VIN numbers. Over the years, it must have cost them thousands in unnecessary lookups.
You could always contact the seller?

Why are people being so secretive about doing a Reg --> Vin lookup?
Just use this site: http://www.blue-print.com/Newweb/index6_fs.asp
Bung in the reg and it'll give you the vin.
