Hi folks

Looking for either some validation or constructive criticism. Have decided I want a 530/535 touring from the last gen. 3 series is too small (2 young kids, two large dogs) and I really want a 6 cylinder (petrol or diesel) so as far as I can see that means 5er, a6, jag XF or merc. Don’t like merc, jag is too tacky inside, and having had a look at both prefer the 5er for looks and comfort. So...

The question is, where is the sweet spot in terms of good value to buy now and minimising depreciation? My man maths is saying that if I spend low 20s now on a 3 year old with 30k miles, it should still be worth 12ish in 3 years? Does that seem reasonable? So in terms of depreciation I’m only looking at 3k or so per year. Or would I be better going 25ish now and getting something on a 15/65 plate, or the other way and picking up a 13 for under 20? Or is it about spec more than age and mileage?

Also, I’m assuming well worth either used approved for warranty or buying the insured warranty, even at £1000 a year? And finally, worth holding out for a 535 rather than 530? I don’t think the economy or maintenance would be much worse, will they hold their value better?

Any help appreciated.

Couple below that I’ve been considering. Former is sold now, latter is decent but not auc so add another 1k for warranty...

In my opinion you are probably looking at a minimum 3k.
If you kept it for 2 years and put on average millage of say between 20-27k miles over that period it estimate around 8k total depn.

I'd be inclined to agree with your figures if you kept it for 3 years then you probably lose around 10-12k total.

Thank you. I think I can sell that - 3-4k a year is ok.
