Got an X3 35d with the MSport 21" and it is utter st in the snow. Struggles for grip all the time. Pretty sure my M4 grips better!
I assume its the low profile tyres and not the xDrive?

Thought I wouldn't have to fit winter tyres if I got an xDrive. My friends XC90 R-Design goes through anything and thats on big wheels too.

yeah 4WD doesn't always mean problem free travel in ice and snow- always do the sensible thing and go for the winters

I remember driving up to a ski resort with about 3 inches of snow on the road in a 335d touring and passing a confused looking English bloke putting snow chains on his x5 - wink I had winter tyres on my rear drive 335d!

I guess you have just learnt that summer tyres (especially low profile, large diameter, "sporty" wide tyres) are good for just the summer. 4WD makes no difference to cornering or braking, either.

Three options:
Don't "upgrade" to massive wheels when you order, but go for smaller wheels with sensible all-season tyres or,
Buy a set of winter wheels/tyres for around £1300. Not as expensive as you think, given that you are paying twice for tyres but will get a total of twice the mileage.
Slither around / crash / leave it in the garage.

Why does everyone think 4wd is magic? It just means you can spin 4 low profile RFT summer tyres instead of 2.

Plenty of BMW 4 wheel drive snow/ice fail videos on youtube.

Highly amusing.

Did the same in my E60 M5, driving past X5s and other 4x4s. That's why we have winter wheels and tyres for the X5.

Xdrive on summers is still better than rwd on summers.
Often it's the last 100 metres of journeys that are tough, and can now be negotiated gently rather than not at all.

Summer brand makes a difference too.

Goodyear F1s feel positively all-season next to Re050 or S001 Bridgestone tyres.

I've no idea why BMW use Bridgestone tyres.

I totally agree yes

We have an X3 and an X5 both without winters and I’ve always been told a 2wd with winters will out perform a 4x4 with normal tyres.

To be fair, my wife’s old X3 was pretty good in snow but I’ve had no opportunity to try either on summers so far this year.

My old F10 M5 had winters, made a huge difference in st winter weather but I never got the chance to try them in snow.

As has been said, check out YouTube to confirm the difference winter make over summers.

Just buy a proper 4x4. Terrain response system on the Disco and Range Rover is in a different league for snow/off road.

Maybe he wants a bit of reliability ? And tyres are all.

but surely if I get a range rover with 21" wheels and low profiles I'll hit the same problem?

Totally agree on the tyres, my old 135i BMW on winters and quaife diff was brilliant I. Snow and ice.

But my Full fat Rangie 2014 is on another level on cross climates in snow mode, you can floor it in deep snow and it hooks up where my TT was spinning the wheels all the time on the same roads on same day (haldex 4x4 is not real 4x4 as the diffs are open and just has a braked system on the rear to replicate a locking diff)

The rangie has been totally reliable btw

Wrong on both counts. I’ve owned 2 Discoveries over the past 10 years (7+3) years. Nether have broken down. If they were as bad as numpties on here suggest, do you think Land Rover would have sold so many?

I run all weather tyres on mine and it’s all but unstoppable. Laughs at snow. BMW and VAG are pretend 4x4s.

It has nothing to do with the car. It is only about the tyres. You have the wrong tyres. Of course you struggled in the snow. Why would you do anything but? Why would you blame the car?

Your standard inappropriate summer tyres will turn into slicks at the first hint of snow and you will just sail on into the next obstacle all for the same cost as your insurance excess ! Winter or at least 4 seasons tyres needed .

This.

Plus, it's a school run car. The schools close when it snows so the manufacturer hasn't equipped the vehicle for those conditions.

So true!

The last time we had proper snow down my way was in 2010 and at least half of the cars I saw abandoned were 4X4s on bling wheels, mostly near corners or junctions.

What people don't seem to realise is that while 4X4s might get moving better than other cars, they still rely on 4 wheels to turn or stop. But then every 2WD car uses 4 wheels for turning and stopping so in those situations the 4X4 offers nothing extra (apart from more weight)!
