You'll get a better 330d for 20k than a 335d so unless you absolutely crave that performance its worth considering.
I was underwhelmed by the difference between the 535d and the 530d so instead opted for a newer 530d over a slightly older 535d.
I was the opposite. I was underwhelmed by the difference between the 535d and the 530d so instead opted for a newer 530d over a slightly older 535d.
f10 530d 254bhp v 535d 300bhp.
In absolute terms you have 18% more peak power BUT that doesn’t givevhe whole story as it’s so much faster everywhere.
From memory 0-100mph is high 12’s v high 16’s. So significantly quicker.

Cheers for response and valuable advice. Although I'm old and getting older, I do absolutely crave availability of that performance. I'd never be happy paying almost the same money when something with a few more horses and torque is near (and that's before remap).I was underwhelmed by the difference between the 535d and the 530d so instead opted for a newer 530d over a slightly older 535d.

If that’s he case and £20k is he budget stretch a touch and a F10 M5 is yours with 560bhp. icdbdis said:
I've factored in a bit of a stretch already... but where does it end? Now you have me looking
My view is you only live once but then try to be sensible about it. Hence I have gone fast diesel very fast petrol (RS6) fast diesel and next ... well it’s going to be petrol and it’s going to be fast and needs to be notably quicker than a F10 535d so it’s going to be RS6/E63/XF-R/M5

The 530d will achieve vastly higher mph deep into 60’s mpg (the f30 gets into 70mpg per bimmer website forum members)
Will it? Driven the new 530d and mid 40s was achieved, but mid 60s not a chance, unless you have a feather weight right foot and a tailwind
Went to Orkney in a 420d Gran Coupe last year and even that was only breaking 50mpg if driven gently
I’d recommend a 35d, had 2 E91s and its a car I miss hugely.
Mrs mrt had a 435d Coupe home over the new year break (she sells new BMWs at the local dealer) and I REALLY enjoyed driving it, if and when I can afford a new car a 435d Gran Coupe is on my radar

Well considering I get low to mid 40’s day in day out in my F10 pre LCI 535d and long trips gets you into 50mpg I’d say it’s a driving style or location difference (though I’m in Berkshire so that level of traffic gets me Day in day out Mog - brim to brim verified). The new 5 series 530d being much lighter and more efficient has to be materially better

The 520d that I had (g31) struggled to get 40mpg on a very careful run. It really surprised me how uneconomical it was.
Extremely comfy though. What I imagine a Mercedes to be like, forget the fun and just relax...
I experienced that too with he E90 320d that I had as a courtesy car while my E90 330d was in for a service...Extremely comfy though. What I imagine a Mercedes to be like, forget the fun and just relax...
320d 38mpg was the rough number for the 3 day commute I had - however my 330d auto (not stick shift) gave 42mpg and I drove that hard every day in certain spots.
335d wagon owner here
50mpg on the motorway at 70mph
45mpg at 85
Less than 30 in town
There is very little that will convincingly waste it from a standing start and overtaking anywhere is safe and easy
Its seriously fast
My teenage kids are pretty tall and gobby but have no complaints spending up to 5h at a time in the back on long trips
My car is leased and so poverty spec
Coming from a loaded RR Sport there is nothing I really miss kit wise
On a SH car Id expect ProNav with the big screen just because someone else has actually paid for it however in reality its just a pretty face with crap functionality - I use Waze on my phone, ProNav gives duff routes and only computes real time traffic on major arterial roads
The kids moan about not having rear arse warmers but the car has some kind of magic fan heater in its climate system which gets it producing decent heat in no time so thats not a big deal
The one thing Id say was essential on a Touring is 'extended storage' which costs about 150 quid from memory, you get nets on the door backs, a very useful cubby under the light switch, 12v in the back and a fantastic boot storage gizmo plus more nets in the boot. Id honestly not buy a Touring without it
And having said all of that I dont think I'll really miss it
The car is phenomenal but lacks a little character
A 340i would be worth a look and prices are dropping nicely
It will be abysmal in snow but a set of winters will see you right
And 20k should get you into a nice 3y old 335d if you really want to
Cheers
Just over two years in mine, brilliant all rounder really. Has pace, comfort (lots of extras) and decent tech. Fancied a change last year and tried a diesel Macan and although it's a nice car it couldn't touch it in terms of performance and technology so I kept the 3. Downsides? It's so good at what it does that it lacks character and the interior is a bit dated.

As you can see from a few posters about your point above if that’s all your getting you bought the incorrect engine. Driven the new 530d and mid 40s was achieved, but mid 60s not a chance, unless you have a feather weight right foot and a tailwind

Hello, my first post and asking for advice already...
I've been looking to change car and can't find anything that gets near the 335D, if economy, performance and tax are considered. I think I've made up my mind so it's just a case of what I can afford and what issues to look out for... cue post. Looking for something around £20k.
- My journey to work is less than 20 miles return. Am I going to be forever paying for the EGR valve to be serviced or some similar problem caused by lack of good run on a daily basis?
- Any issues I should look out for on a 2014 onwards model (I haven't even started studying model years and numbers yet)?
- Is there any particular option that I might really miss if I didn't hold out for a car with it (I appreciate that this is subjective but feel free to comment)?
I have more but don't want to use up my quota before I've even got 2 feet through the door. Any advice re this topic would be gratefully received, even if unrelated to the above questions.
Cheers,
IC.
Hi, I went through this same decision recently and bought a 335d touring at the weekend. I looked and looked for something that may Match it and while a 330i looked tempting I just fancied the 35d. One of the things I really like is that they have done away with the twin exhaust on the 35d. Once debadged it looks to any normal joe like a 320d, I like this being under the radar but I appreciate some may have the opposite feelings on this one. I had around £22k to go with and there really is a quite a lot of choice. A 2014 model should easily get you one with Pro Nav if that’s important. The LCI in late 2015 gave LED headlights as standard I believe and a saloon could just about be snapped up from Motorpoint at £20k. There is one at £19,599 for a 2015 but this one is a nice colour combo and 2016.
335d
The standard nav is fine and if you never had the pro you can’t miss it. The HK audio would probably be the nicest thing to have but I mostly have talk sport on so that would be a waste most of the time. I wanted the newest I could (time in warranty) and decided that the standard kit was sufficient. I managed to pick up a 66 plate with just under 20k miles at around by £22k budget. While there are no options other than privacy glass it has every thing you need and really this car is donminated by the engine, it has so much available performance all the time and is pretty comfy too when it needs to be.
