The final insult to the 6 Series badge
Discussion
Heard this coming a while back. But, in honesty you can get a 4 pot diesel 7 series (725d).
Not an engine I would like in these cars, but you can get them...
Oh and considering the 6GT is even larger than the outgoing 6 F Series cars (GC included) then I doubt this engine has any right in there!

I cant see the issue with going to a four from a six providing the numbers compare in a Diesel lets face it they are all rattly soul less things couldn't get any passion for a Diesel as useful as they are MPG big torque etc remove the forced induction and they couldnt remove the skin off rice pudding , its all different with petrol of course this I do get going from even six cyl's to four ....no thanks

I would not describe the n57/b57 as rattly. Remove the forced induction? Bmw use forced induction on all there ice engines petrol or diesel!
Brutally as well many modern petrols dont sound that great as many rely on lean burn and other emissions devices...

I can only assume you’ve not driven a 6 cylinder BMW diesel. Chalk and cheese when compared to a 4. As for removing the turbo(s)...... well why would you? Does anyone make s non turbo diesel these days?
Anyway back to the topic. Isn’t that just an updated 5 GT? It’s weird, they could never sell many of the 6s so they make it worse...........

It is essentially yes an updated 5GT. Clearly BMW wanted to fill the void and made an argument that customers got confused by the 5GT.As for removing the turbo(s)...... well why would you? Does anyone make s non turbo diesel these days?

Interior is nice on them, i wont comment on the outside, but in pure dimensions the fact that it is even larger than the outgoing F series 6 is disturbing. Additionally if anything the GT is more 7 series hatchback than 5 series (possibly supports some of the reason to have it like it is).

A decent 6 cylinder diesel can still be a lovely thing. 4 cylinder engines in a car like this? No, just no. Sardonicus said:
es lots the last being a 535 with the compound Turbo set up and remapped, like I say they are unrefined narrow power banded oil burners that without forced induction just wouldn't perform even if designed as a naturally aspirated engine, Turbo or Super charging do not maketh an engine after being in the motor trade for over 30+ years thats not going to change anytime soon , just my cents worth not a dig
Why harp on about how they might be without forced induction, or if they were designed as NA? They aren’t, weren’t and never will be. They are what they are and the 6s are bloody good at what they do.
The fours are good at what they do, just not as good as the 6s. Not even close.
What a disgrace, I had a 630d for a few days a few weeks ago, even started a thread saying how much I liked driving it, a 2.0 diesel really wouldn’t suit it, it would actually ruin it in fact, 7.9 seconds my arse, in gear acceleration must be atrocious, it’s a seriously big lump, who would actually buy one is the question. I’ll repeat myself, the car is massive, must be more of a 7 series hatchback and the last thing it needs is that abomination under the bonnet!

I really liked the fact that the old 6 series was only available with 6 cylinder engines or bigger. I've had a E61 520d and that engine was a gutless match to its 1700kg kerbweight so I know this will be very disappointing to drive in terms of performance.
I suppose the only saving grace is that this really isn't a 6 series at all and its a 5 series, and that hateful 20d engine has always been available in the 5 series.
I must admit I was also shocked when I first saw a 7 series with a 4 pot diesel in it, and because I'm old fashioned I think a premium car should have a premium engine. The 4 pot diesel is a noisy rattly mess of an engine for me, and shouldn't have a place in a 7 series.
I'm guessing the new 8 series will end up with the 4 pot diesel in it as well now. The E89 Z4 is really appealing to me, because that seems to be the only fairly recent BMW that's escaped from having that woeful engine in it!
