Latest BMW Recalls

I wonder why no-one here seems to be commenting on the latest BMW recalls (x2) after BBC Watchdog got involved?

As I understand it, BMW has now extended an initial recall for power supply issues (cars suddenly cutting out without warning) for all 1, 3, Z4 and X1 petrol and diesel models built between March 2007 and August 2011, and replacing the B+ battery connector.

Also, they are now recalling an additional 88,000 3 series cars built between Dec 2004 and July 2011 to replace the heater blower regulator harness.

Anyone here been contacted by BMW and how did it go? I'm still waiting for my car to spontaneously combust.

Still waiting to hear from BMW on the recalls. Three weeks was the time frame BMW allowed themselves after ‘Watchdog’ broadcast.
Very unimpressed.

The original recall was for cars built between March 2007 and August 2011, so I thought both of my 2006 registered cars were outside of the recall.

But then BMW added more cars to the recall and based on the DVLA website my 06 plate E91 is due a recall (although my 56 plate Z4 isn't).

I rang my local Sytner dealership today and they have added me to the waiting list - apparently they don't have the parts yet!

But then it's 12 years old and hasn't spontaneously combusted yet, so a few more weeks may be OK! (I hope).

My 2010 E90 is due a recall, according to the DVLA. I phoned up Sytner on Monday, and the guy I spoke to took my details, and I'm now waiting for the very prompt call back I was promised.

It took them something like 6 months and several phone calls before I got the airbag in my E46 replaced, so it's probably still a bit early to expect anything. The guy did say that they were a bit short of the relevant parts, for some reason, so there's that too...

That's what I understood too, hence my surprise at not seeing very much owner feedback at all about the issue. Last night's episode/update on the recalls was the last in the current series, so I expect things will now go very quiet from BMW.

I contacted my local BMW garage to have the airbag recall dealt with late last year, they told me no other recalls were outstanding. Time to go back again and recheck. Bloody BMW I’m begining to wish I had stuck with Skoda tbh.

It's possible that the first recalls in 2017 may have been in the USA market, where I think the problem first became highlighted?

Hi, no, was UK too, had this recall on my 2010 Z4 last year

One of my colleagues has a '16 1-series that caught fire whilst she was driving it last week. She'd had it serviced at a BMW main dealer the week before and they'd found no faults or causes for concern. The car will be written off, but she's waiting for a response from BMW before progressing an insurance claim.

I wonder if the recall will be broadened?

Here are the US versions of the recalls:

(They won’t differ fundamentally apart from in America you’ll probably be guaranteed a hire car)

The heater one looks horrible and if it’s not done well could cause problems at a later date. Glad it was only airbags on my old E46!

ps. Just discovered that my car is now showing (as of today's date) as having an outstanding recall on the DVSA website: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk
It says I should make contact with my nearest BMW dealer to book it in for repair, although the BMW website says they will be contacting customers in the next 3 weeks, but helpfully, the notice is undated.

Not sure, hasn't been assessed yet. However, she didn't have the heating/aircon on.

Yes I have also seen my car indicating a recall notice on the DVSA website. Somethings happening at long last.

In the US there's an additional recall for positive crankcase ventilation valve on N52 engines.

Not sure if there's a difference between US and EU Models, but this can also cause your car to spontaneously combust.

Didn’t even know about the recalls until I read this.
My 2006 work horse until it dies touring is listed as requiring the recall.
I’ll get it in at some point.

Aside from the the 'why wouldn't you' argument, are these recalls mandatory?

What happens if you ignore the offer/letter from BMW?

Not mandatory.

Your insurance may not pay out if an accident is thought to be caused by an unrectified fault, but they probably wouldn't check most of the time.

My son bought a £50 Lipo as a stopgap. He was looking at recalls and saw one outstanding for a pedal box replacement.
He got it done, after the local dealer had difficulties sourcing one (as the car was so old). Dealer fitted it free and did mention that the car would not pass another MOT without a lot of work (of which my son was well aware).
