Crazy insurance on BMW 640d?
Discussion
Hey guys,
I'm at the middle of purchasing a 640d (not new) but I'm getting insurance quotes for around £1.7-2k which is madness.
I'm in my 20s and my current car Porsche 911, I pay about £1.1k.
So transferring all my no claims bonus the insurance rises from £1.1k to around double?
Is this expected, if anything I was expecting the 6 series to be lower than my Porsche. Porsche is 3.6 the BMW is 3.0 and less horsepower.
So yeah I was very surprised after having this conversation with my insurance company.

As a steer my insurance has gone up notably on a F10 535d despite zero point: (ever) never any accident same miles same business miles ditto wife no change.
Anyway my price has increased from £430 4 years ago to £630 ish start of this year. Yes I shop around & yes I’m a lot older than you but those silly prices you state wow I’d not even consider it if quoted that as a possible price.

Try Dave Goodman at Tollgate Private Clients you may get a nice surprise https://tollgateprivateclients.co.uk/
The 6 is a bigger car and bigger than most uk car parking spaces so i think there is factor there (many full size suv's are shorter in length).
Not sure on the 911, but unlike many of the models it is all aluminium body minus the composite wings and boot.
It has always been pricey to insure it and the quote is fairly typical (i am mid 20 to late 20's) and is about right imo. Not sure on your insurance group of the 911, but the 6 is group 50 across the board.
Additionally not helping recent costs is the theft of interiors from various bmw models steering wheels, idrive and other trim being targeted across Europe.

The premium doesn't have that much to do with bhp, 0-60 etc. Our old 650i was expensive to insure but not as much as the Disco 3 we had at the time. They in turn were both more expensive than the 2008 Gallardo we had which was a 5ltr with 520bhp. Lots of different factors they consider. From experience 6 series have always had fairly pricey premiums. Aviva did me the best deal with the last one I had.

Having had a 911 and a diesel 6-series in the past, I think you are mad!I'm at the middle of purchasing a 640d (not new) but I'm getting insurance quotes for around £1.7-2k which is madness.

911 a true sports car, 640d is a 5 series in a frock.
I lasted c. 10 months and regretted almost every day.

The 911 is an awesome sports car but I like wafting along in the 640 now.

I recently changed from a 335D Touring to a F Pace 3.0S (slower but more expensive) and my premium dropped from £1,200 to £600 - Direct Line woman just said that's the way it is as an explanation.
I swapped an E46 325ti Sport for an E91 325i SE earlier this year and the premium shot up for some reason - so at renewal I went elsewhere! But I'm sure Direct Line woman has no idea - just another quote monkey working to a script!
Well I managed to find a policy for about £1.1k so hopefully that goes well, still bemused why the other company wanted £2k.
With regards to the 911 vs 640d debate, lol.
My 911 is 2007 so getting a bit old, and I eventually want to upgrade to the newer 991 2012 onwards model. My other car is 3 series BMW, and I think most Porsche owners drive two cars.
So 640d as a daily driver alongside hopefully a newer Porsche 911 in the future is the idea, if finances and circumstances allow.
Driving the 640d, I have to say it is a beast, power like I can't explain. Super fast, once you are in the right rev range, powers through. As someone above said, it is literally wafting. Once moving, it feels say from 30mph to 90mph as fast as my 911, but without any noise. And it is so smooth, but yeah in terms of handling, it doesn't turn or handle anywhere close to a 911.
It is also nice to be able to go 15-20 mph over humps comfortably, my 911 I would have to slow down to about 4 mph. And when taking my mates, full grown lads, in the back on my 911 - it was pretty uncomfortable to watch.
But yeah it's no Porsche.

I have a family member who is in the insurance game.
And he said one of the biggest factors of quotes being so high is down to the area you live in, and how many of the vehicle you're trying to insure have had claims against them!!!
Ridiculous but he swears that's a factor, and I've heard the same from insurers my self!!
So we basically get punished for others poor driving, lack of security etc!

I think insurance companies just don't like them for some reason, I just changed from a 640D to an M4 comp and the M4 is £120pa cheaper, the 640 was more to insure than the two heavily modified cars I own. maybe the are very expensive to insure or there have been some very large claims compared to the number on the road.

Seems eminently sensible to me. And he said one of the biggest factors of quotes being so high is down to the area you live in, and how many of the vehicle you're trying to insure have had claims against them!!!

You don’t think the risk in, say, Liverpool, after a few thefts of the same model, is higher than, say, rural Suffolk with no thefts?
Not much to do with owners’ ‘Lack of security’; more cars are stolen in cities and some areas are higher risk than others. It’s a no brainer.
