amongst other issues (being totally dead after parking up) mine cut out/restarted whilst driving rang BMW and they took it in, got it back a few days later, no courtesy car but it's back and clean and working (for the past 2 days)

The letter i got said it was one recall (battery terminal) but when they got the car they said they would do the heater plug recall too.

Don’t think the recall applies to E85/86 models ( Z4)

Ours is a 2005 E91- although it's cut out while driving (total loss of all electrical power), BMW said, 2 days ago, that it is not covered as it is too early to have the faulty B+ cable. Thanks to the reminder of the DVLA link above, I've just checked again, and as of today, it shows as having an outstanding recall.

I guess now it will just be for the heater thingy and not the cable! Will keep you posted.

I understand that they need 300,000+ cables for just the UK, and currently have none. It's going to be interesting getting this resolved.

Press reports stated:

The vehicles included are the BMW 1 Series, the 3 Series, the Z4 and X1 petrol and diesel models made between March 2007 and August 2011. These cars may be affected by an electrical fault which could cause the engine to cut out completely while on the road.

Yep, and it doesn’t affect the E85/86 Z4

The E89 .. yes

I know, I have one, and it’s not affected

DVLA check for recalls is not always accurate. The best way to 100% check is a visit to your local dealer.

Booked my E92 in for the cable recall, took it in several weeks later and left the car with them.
Later returned when the phones to tell me my car was ready, only to be told that the car needed to be returned as they didn’t have the parts required to fix the problem. However, I was also advised that the car had been inspected and it ‘is safe to drive’. I have no idea when the appointment for the recall fix will be.

I've just checked my 2006 E92 330d on the DVLA site and it says there is an outstanding recall found. Does anybody know what this will be for? I read somewhere the battery cable one is for cars later than mine so just wondered.

Thanks for your input.

The press release was very poorly worded.

Yes I imagine the ZE85/E86 Z4s used an older design of connector, but then the E89s got the newer (defective) one!

My 56 plate E86 isn't due a recall, but my 06 plate 325i is on the waiting list at Sytner as they don't have the parts. frown

E85/6 was based on the E46, it’s a generation behind the E90/1/2/3 hence no battery cable/heater recall.

Dropped my E91 into Barons (Kentish Town) yesterday after booking it in around a month ago. I specifically asked if they would have parts in to complete the recall (just the blower matrix on mine) and was assured they would. Guess what, just had a call - they have pulled the dash apart and decided the car needs the part changing, but don't have any in meaning I have to take the car away and they will then take the interior apart all over again. Not impressed at all.

I would drop BMW-UK a line about this, as I'm sure they won't be impressed with an unnecessarily inflated charge-back.

Believe that this may be the standard approach for the blower cable - they are prioritising cars where the cable needs immediate repair, followed by cars where the cable has discoloured but doesn't need immediate replacement.

I had a similar thing when they checked the recalls as part of other work I was doing - battery cable was done immediately, blower cable replacement has been deferred.

Yes from what I have read and from what the service advisor told me it seems they are prioritising checking all cars and if there is signs of excessive heat on the connectors the dealership will retain the car and 'BMW will put the customer in a vehicle'. It's annoying it wasn't communicated properly beforehand but I think my mood wasn't helped when the result of the diagnostic did not point out which wheel speed sensor to replace but instead suggested I should be sending the DSC unit off to ecutuning....

I've got a 57 E91 and had the letter advising me I am due the positive battery terminal recall but to await contact at a later date to actually book the car in.

The final "production" parts to fix the issue do not exist yet.

If your car has an issue they will do a temporary fix to make it safe and then you will have to take the car back later when they have the final parts available.

They have to take it apart to inspect it.
