Looks more like someone searching for posts, however old, to be critical and how good the good old days used to be.

Having owned BMWs for over 20 years, left to go to Tesla for a while, I’m now back. Whatever you think of BMW engineering and service I can assure you there’s a lot worse out there.

A B58 engine willbe on my drive next week in a 840 GC and 8m not worried in the slightest
What was your Tesla experience like?

Surfice to say the car at first feels great, instant torque, great drive train etc, a;; the instant gratification stuff, but the fit and finish was not good to start and slowly got worse. Customer service went from distant to v poor and Tesla just don't give a damn about their owners. Google batterygate, chargegate, MCU failing, Model 3 undertrays that disintegrate if they get wet, heater failures for examples. For all the criticism BMW owners get and the "do BMWs have indicator?" jokes, by far the most arrogant and self appointed saviours of the universe are Tesla owners and I just found I neither wanted a car out of warranty an facing £3k of repairs within 12 months or a knackered but "within spec" battery, a company that values their own cars 3k lower than WBAC, or sitting next owners at superchargers while they look down upon every other car driver including EV drivers.

Even the tech isn't that good in all honesty, I'm looking forward to seeing how good the driver professional pack thing is on my 8 series when I get it, from videos I expect it to be every bit if not better than the Teslas system.

Vent over... but it made for good therapy.

laugh I can relate to some of that, as an i3 driver i've had a couple of unpleasent experiences with the "superior" Tesla drivers. One tailgating me closely at a speed very suitable for road, and the other had a go when I parked too close to him at a charge point, which was only because he had parked a across the line into my space. Its strange, as the i3 and EV community as a whole is generally great, and the i3 is also a great car I should add. But, im sure not all Tesla drivers are angry fanboys.

Back on topic, i tried a Tesla when looking for a replacement for our other car but have gone with a B58 m340i, hoping they have improved the design and this is no longer an issue.

Issue still alive and well from OP.
Placed my X4 M40i in for first service today at the main dealer here in Chester (UK) 11500 miles on the clock and purchased from new Sep 19. Received a phone call at mid day to say the engine oil filter had collapsed during the removal and that I shouldn’t be worried as it’s covered under warranty ??. No offer of courtesy car and asked if I minded them keeping my car overnight- like I had an option
Parts ordered but they couldn’t articulate what has been ordered or a timeframe for it to be repaired and ready for collection.

Mine was Ok when it was serviced in January. I’d been lazy and had followed the CBS and the car had done 18k when it was serviced (yes, I know it’s probably not the best thing for the car). I was well aware of it and asked the service advisor and he assured me I’d be called if there were any issues which there weren’t.

I would have told to to wind his door handles in and ask him why his lane departure system did guide him in straight.

Not sure when the cutover was, but I was informed when I had my service in August 2020 (which also entailed a second broken filter) that they've updated both filter and housing design to prevent the issue from occurring going forward.

I change oil & filter every year on mine, regardless of mileage (usually only 8k ish).

Not had any problems yet.

Not to worry you guys, but my X3 M40i is in BMW as we speak having the engine replaced (under warranty, thankfully) as a direct consequence of this issue. At the last oil service, which I can’t quite remember when it was but about a year ago and maybe 12,000 miles ago, I had the filter collapse issue you guys have described here. BMW carried out the filter housing change and said everything was good. About a month ago, I notice a loud ticking noise coming from the engine, that runs in time with the engine speed, so I booked the car in to be looked at. To say the technicians were surprised to hear this noise would be an understatement, and the told me straight up it sounded serious. Upon removing the top end of the engine, they have found bits of paper oil filter in the engine, apparently blocking the oil galleries which has starved the engine of oil at the top. There was talk from them of removing the sump to see if it had got in the bottom, and then just repairing the engine, but BMW HQ stepped in a said no, has to be a new engine. They have had the car a week and looks like they will have it another 2 before the work is complete, as the engine has to be shipped from Germany. I’m so glad I’ve had the car serviced only by BMW main dealer, because if I hadn’t, it would have been easy for them to blame my service agent for the issue. Hope this does not happen to any of you, apparently it’s quite uncommon.

At least it’s been sorted.

This seems to be the worst case of a disintegrating filter that I’ve heard of. Most manage to have the pieces fished out.

Oil filter disintegrated in my 340iM FOR THE SECOND TIME!!
A 2018 model with 30,000 on the clock.
The first time was in 2019 when it needed a first oil change. They had to replace the whole unit and it took 48 hours to get the part from Germany. Naturally no charge and a spare car given.
Now November 2021 it goes in for MOT, oil change and service. I have always used main dealer AND have paid for an extended guarantee.
No issues with the car, nothing apart from the oil filter disintegration issue.
After one hour waiting they just came out and said the oil filter had disintegrated for a second time, very honest.
Parts ordered from Germany again and another replacement car given.
I said “ if it has happened twice then it will happen a third time” They said if it happens again they, as main dealer would back me 100% as it is a recurring issue from new.

Having read this string on the subject I will demand written assurances regarding reoccurrence and engine liability in the event of paper particles blocking oil flow and blowing the engine.
This is not on for a £51k car. I am currently as Red as my Imola Red car.

Its across the board, been happening for years. Numerous people have contacted BMW, no response, answers or reassurance given.

I use a trusted "M" Indy who does mine every 6 months. He knows of the issues, can plan for and avoid them. Note a reputable trusted indy, not general indy. I have heard all manner of inconsistencies with regards dealers, but I don't go near dealerships at all for anything.

Which Indy do you use if I may ask ? Might get an 'interim' oil change done on my X3 soon.

Ah, hello yet again, Just PM you on the other forum.

TWG in Camberley. Utterly spot on and well renowned for miles around. They are also on the recommended list on PH. There was a place in Walton I went to when I bought it for a couple of bits, Tim at ETL I think it was called - not bad but you could never get hold of him.

Ill meet you for a coffee whilst your there if you go to TWG. Plus Scuderia Prestige is round the corner, and always have a good few million pounds worth of stock in the showroom.

I agree wholeheartedly.
