It’ll cost a whole lot less than £400 for an oil and filter change on the ZF5HP19. Just need to make sure you use he correct oil (Still got 20ish litres in my shed!).

This ^ not that kind of money at all wink the OE ZF parts are not expensive anyway IMO, failure is normally the pump plain bearing failing/wearing thus seizing to the T/C and then spinning its way out of the housing doing £'s of damage in the process frown personally they should of used a roller or ball bearing rolleyes this problem affects the ZF transaxle variants of this box (same bearing) also Porsche VAG etc scratchchin

Sorry if the c£400 seems high, that was perhaps for the older 5HP30 boxes which, IIRC, take a lot more oil; my E39 has a 5HP24 which is different again from the 5HP19 of the poster. The message is though, it's affordable and worth doing.

Gearbox filter? Your local BMW dealer. Or eBay.

Autobox

Edit: Replied before seeing the above. I plan to take the car for the oil change so I will just check what they are using and buy if required.

Surprised at how many of you have owned more than one e39. But, as we know, when you have had one, you know just how good they are.
I don't have pics of mine for some reasons, though I've had three, all SE spec. My current 530i SE Touring is the best-handling of the three, partly helped by its lightness at the front, and also by being manual which very much helps the accurate metering out of power to the rear.

My first two were slushbox dag-dags, the first a 525d saloon which was a bit of a dog, the second a 530d Touring which was much nicer. But the spec I always wanted was a facelift manual 530i Touring, so my present one is the one I'm keeping for as long I can, barring the unlikeliness of getting my hands on one of the very few manual RHD Alpina B10 3.3 Tourings or a really nice 6-speed manual 540i Touring

Has anyone replaced the windscreen seal/moulding? There is a YT video and it looks so-so-ish

Also interested in the total spent on yours as it seems to have all the essentials covered.

Does anyone think people are paying the near crazy prices dealers are asking for some of the 540s? 6k+?

Depends on how you look at it, I think I paid £5k for my Sport 5 years ago and if I could get a similar one now I would probably pay the same!

E39's are one of the last generations of BMW's, along with E38's and E46's, where an owner/maintainer can look after them without having to know masses about coding and computer resetting - imho this will increase their desirability and value against the later models who's designed over-complexity may well dramatically reduce their overall usable life.

Nope; paid nearly £5k for my current touring; sold my previous 530i saloon for £4.5k...

Looked after examples of these cars are fetching good money as they're superb cars, very well put together and don't have any of the over complicated electrics of later era BMWs...

540i E39s, if in good nick, are fetching hell of a lot more than £6k! There are quite a few close to £10k and over now; they're getting rarer and rarer and those coming from Japan are fetching a premium too

Trouble is, the three BMW's mentioned are amongst the most needy and problematical in old age. Most E39's now are just sheds, but a really good one is indeed a car worth having.

Having said that, the first F10's are coming up to ten years old and have proven pretty durable.

I have a good condition one at 80k and really not sure it’s worth keeping mint as it’s kept outside. Seems like it’s time to punt it to someone to keep in a garage,
