Keen to hear views from the PH community on our conundrum re our family wheels !

Currently in an X3 35d, had from new since Nov 2015. Its been a super car, but almost 70k on the clock due to Mrs Coopers change of job and longer commute. As a result its now worth significantly less than we'd originally expected.

Been offered what seems like a decent deal on a new M40i. But its a big financial commitment and part of me wonders whether we just hang on to the existing car. Only concerns are that it is now out of warranty and had no work done other than consumables. Milage will reduce significantly from next month on due to change in her work commitments.

By most if not all accounts I’ve read the X3M40i is a great bit of kit.
If you’re not excited then perhaps it’s not floating your boat or as you imply concern over the financial burden is dissuasive.

So I would say stick for now , the 35d has been good to 70k and that would give me confidence it’ll go on. Although you could balance any risk of big issues with a BMW Insured warranty. Pay monthly , you can increase excess to get payments down. Won’t be cheap for an over 60k but maybe worth it.

Great cars, but for the money the 35d is perfectly fine. Very very similar performance, if anything SUV's do not always deal best with a petrol, although this is a very modern engine so not sure how it is. For our X5, a 35d engine is the better choice than the V8, as the performance differences are marginal, yet the engine has to lug around the weight with not that much torque.

If you are looking at a nearly new X3 M40i I’d hold on a while as rumour has it they’ve stopped selling it whilst they update the engine to the new 3.0 turbo six that’s going in the M340i.

Will give a bit more poke and the “old” spec engine will be worth less. Some are saying they will also add the new digital dials with nav screen etc built in but I’m not sure. It wouldn’t surprise me though.

Either way I’d wait a few months if you can.

Have you though about the M40d?

I have a ‘15 X3 which I bought new and is now on 55k

I looked at what it’s worth .. how much a new one is and then thought that it’s so good and does exactly what I want, still looks and feels like new

With an eye in what may happen in the future I’ve decided to keep it predominantly because I couldn’t see the 30k difference between mine and and new one that’s essentially the same

A 2015 X3 35D with 70K is hardly worn out, and if you are not desperately unhappy with it, I would keep it - the 35D engine suits it perfectly, arguably better than a petrol engine, even an excellent one in the M40i, and if you take into account the cost to change + depreciation on the new one, any repair or even buying the BMW warranty would be peanuts in comparison.
