We all know about the look of these things - but has anyone ordered one yet?

I just did a couple of long journeys in a top spec M50d demonstrator whilst the M5 was being maintained and it’s really made a positive impression. I am in the market for something with a third row thanks to a growing family and it seems ideal. Very comfortable and refined, supremely practical for 4 kids/teenagers, surprisingly car-like for its size and weight and I genuinely enjoyed driving it.

Just 1) those kidney grilles and 2) fking expensive.

Took a look at the new X5 and the third row is definitely not viable for permanent use / older kids. I must have had rose tinted memories of my E70 7s but the reality is my kids were just small then and we only needed the extra seats occasionally.

We are in the market for a new big SUV and borrowed one of these from the local main dealer for a couple of days. It's not for us, though, we need to get 3 child seats in the back and (remarkably) the X7 can't support that. The second row seats are good but the boot space is massively comprmised if they're in use. So, off to try a Q7.

We've been trying to find a 7-seater to replace the wife's Disco 4. The X7 was at the top of the list but we really didn't get on with it. Shame as we had convinced ourselves it was going to be the right choice. The 3rd row are what I would call occasional seats, esp for adults. The current Disco seems better but the layout sucks compared to previous models. The GLS is pretty good too. But access on all of them is a PITA. Access to those rear seats on the X7 was mad. Once you're in it's better but you wouldn't want to be climbing in and out every day. None were as good as the old shape Discos. So now we're off to look at a Model X at the weekend. May be worth trying the XC90 if a Volvo floats your boat.

Good Carwow review here of the X7 vs FFRR, he doesn't have an issue with the rear seats in fact they look fine.

I thought they were fine - my 5’10 stepdaughter sat in one for about 3 hours and thought it was great - they also have their own sunroof, climate controls and phone chargers.

The only PITA was the electric seats - pressing a button and waiting 30 seconds each way for everything to move - whereas a manual seat would have taken 5s
