Yeah I know biggrin.

I did once buy one, in 2003. A mint 02 745 with 8k miles. What a dog that was. Successfully rejected and swapped into an E46 M3

I had a test drive today. I liked it very much though it’s a similar drive to my current 540 so in a way not exciting. In theory it should be a bit quicker than the 540 as smaller and lighter with the same engine but it didn’t feel it.

Anyway I’ve specked as below and asked for quotes for pcp and cash purchase.

https://configure.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/configid/f5g4p6o...
Looks good, although I'm not sure about the Alpine White... Looks like you've ticked a lot of options: let us know what they come back with!
Offer as below, worth looking elsewhere? Apparently I have £2,683.10 equity in my car or will have when the new car arrives in March.

3 years PCP – 12,000 miles per annum - £17,000 deposit plus your car (£2,683.10 equity in your car) - £423.74 pcm
Cash purchase – your car plus £50,480.50
5k down and 599pm

You will definitely be able to pick up one of tourings for £33k or so next September as they get close to 3rd quarter targets, saloons I would guess £30/31k.

£17000 down and then £429 a month sounds crazy to me.

I offered £31k on a 68 plate 540i Touring that was up for £33k a couple of weeks back.
That was a £59k car.

This will be no different.

That will lose £20,000 to £25,000 in year one and £30,000 to £35,000 over 3-4 years.

I agree!

A £52k M340i today probably won't be worth much more than £20k in 3 years time in which case you potentially won't see a huge amount of that deposit back (which I think is actually over £19k with the equity from the current car?). Amortising that deposit over 3 years the total monthly cost is getting on for £1k and even if you assume there's (say) £5k of the equity left after 36 months that's still over £800/month. Borderline madness for an M-lite 3-series IMO - looking at current deals pukka M-cars are available for significantly less....

Depends what's important to you.

I think this will be our last pcp deal, but it works for us at the moment. 600 per month to have 55k car for 4 years is not too bad. I also don't see the point of a higher deposit on something you don't own. At the end I'll probably ditch it as the final payment will likely be higher than its worth. If not I may buy it. This is a commodity car for me. It will have all the latest features, be pretty quick and comfortable. Is it something I'll take to pick up the milk and spend over an hour in the process..no. however I'm quite excited about getting it as I think it will be a solid drive.

I had a M car bought outright, it got stolen, hoping this is a bit more under the radar.

I would also highly recommend Ashford BMW.

ALL new cars lose value.

Yes I could consider say an M4 (in which case I’d go for a convertible) but that’s a fairly old model now.

Sure they do. 3 series in particular (this segment). £18k after 4 years is pretty steep. No problem if you accept that as given. It's interesting that the X3M residual is maybe 15% higher than an M5 Comp which is 25k more expensive. That's how they pull off these £599 deals.

I think I'd prefer the M5 Comp. No scratch that I want an M760li xdrive.

Of course they do but all I'm saying is I think the current deals on the M340i are mediocre at best compared to some other models in the BMW range.

That's no doubt because it's a new model - and therefore not attracting the level of support BMW are offering elsewhere - but to be spending the equivalent of over £800/month on one makes no sense to me. Something like an X3 M40i is probably closer to an M340i in terms of being a rounded daily driver and they've also been some good offers on those recently (circa £500 down followed by £500 for 48 months IIRC); the offer on the X3M Competition - which is an £80k list price car - is also considerably cheaper than £800/month even when you adjust the headline figures for a 3-year, 36 month agreement.

So each to their own but personally I think you have to be pretty keen on the M340i to be tempted by the deals that are currently on offer!

But I thought in an earlier post you said you'd put £5k down? If so - and you amortise that over a 48 month term - the true cost is over £700/month unless you think you're going to get the £5k back as equity at the end of the agreement (which is unlikely in my view). And by way of comparison you can of course get an X3M Competition - which is an £80k car - for around £600/month but with only £600 down (although there might not be many left on that deal now!).

Don't get me wrong, I very much like the idea of a G21 M340i and will hopefully head that way myself next year as a replacement for my F31 335d. However, I just think they look relatively expensive at the moment and if I was pushed to change now I'd probably set aside my SUV prejudice and go for either an X3 40i or 40d - the current deals on those make them look much better value than the M340i (all IMHO of course!).

The x3m interior is pretty old now, the 3 series is much nicer inside. I doubt there is much in it performance wise. I also don't think the x3m was / is ever a 80k car. Plus the M is going to be higher insurance and more likely to get nicked.

I'm not really that up to speed with the detail of the X3 range but according to the configurator the X3M Competition is £77k before extras (which is a circa £80k car in my book, at least in terms of list price!). I actually thought the G20/G21 interiors were quite similar to the X3 as wasn't that model (the X3) only introduced last year?

I take your point about running costs with an X3M (servicing, fuel consumption, insurance, etc) which is why I said the X3 M40i was probably more comparable to an M340i Touring. Obviously SUV's aren't everyone's cup of tea (to be honest they're not mine!) but you can apparently get into one of those for around £500 down and then £500/month for 48 months which is quite a bit cheaper than the current deals on the M340i. In fairness, though, the good deals on the X3 may now have largely gone as I think they were on cars registered before the end of December (so either sitting in stock or scheduled to be built and delivered before the end of the year).

Interiors are very different, x3m I would say it similar to the old 3 series. I originally wanted the 4 gran coupe for the hatch, I sat in it and it felt very cheap. No better, maybe worse than the m235i cab we are returning to BMW.

I thought the X3M Competition was only introduced earlier this year and, other than having more traditional dials for the speedo and rev counter, the interior layout seems identical to cars like the X3 M40i (so much more G2x than F3x in both look and technology). Therefore, if you're saying the X3M interior is more like the old 3-series I'm wondering if we're talking about the same car?!

The vents and switch gear are not as sharp in the X3. I thought they'd change it for the MY20 cars but it looks as though little has changed, digital cockpit excepted.

Currently paying £399/month for a 440i GC which RRP'd at £52k with options.

Put £5k down and a 15k miles / year allowance over four years.

Looking like I won't get anywhere near that when I look to replace it with an m340i next year.

Might be my last PCP then!

I bet you are also at Alpina B3 prices currently.

I think I would be looking into them if paying £800-1000 a month.

The residual could make it effectively the same numbers
