Out of curiosity, has anyone tried a reputable tuning box (the likes of racechip etc) on an E46 330d? Or other 30d BMW's for that matter?

If so how did you find it?

Did it provide the power quoted, did it provide an economy gain, did you have any problems?

Had them on two 535ds and an X5 3.0d

Great results. Very happy with them. Have had very good results with Bluespark too.

But given its well out of warranty anyway, why not remap?

Considering it for 2 main reasons.

1.) Having a performance gain that's less likely to screw up the DMF and clutch regularly. Most mappers seem to want to take it to circa 260-270bhp and many well north of 425lb ft of torque, however those in the know running the cars seem to reckon 250ish is the top end of what the DMF can cope with without complaint. Plus circa 240bhp and 380ish fl lb is a pretty big gain.

2.) As I currently live the SE (inside the M25), most of the time I cannot use the performance, so the idea of being able to switch maps to an efficiency one, that still gives me a bit more grunt, but potentially significantly better fuel economy and then switch it to power mode when I want the extra grunt, seems like an advantage worth having, even if it means trading off some of the potential extra performance.

Plus there is the 3rd reason, that If i decide to, or need to change cars, I can simply unplug, get it reprogrammed for free and plus into a new car.

I had one on a 525d.
It produced better fuel economy, and a few more horses when required.
What's not to like?

I have no experience of timing boxes on cars. Re remaps screwing clutches/flywheels on 330ds, they won’t cause problems with a good/new standard clutch.

A mapper should set the power and torque to your requirements.

Re dmfs, the 2.9 330d dmf will be fine with a mild map, not a high torque one.

The 3.0 330d with a new LUK dmf will be fine for lots of power and torque.

I'm with you on this by the way

I've used them a lot over the years with very positive results.

I preferred the Blue Spark boxes as they are UK based and have a great turnaround service when getting a box retuned for another car.

The Racechip is better but i'd problems with the one they sent me for my 2018 Cooper S which meant it threw on the EML. They resolved it but the box had to go back to Germany at my cost and their customer service was naff.
