Hi

Anyone got a strong view on whether combined washer dryers are any good?

(Small flat situation so haven't got room for separate units)

Thanks

Generally people say they are no good, from my understanding. I’ve had one and it was fine. Rather have 2 machines though, as you can do both things at once. Washing seems to get done in batches around here!

Got one in our place in Essex, had it since we moved in 10 years ago. Not missed a beat.

Ok the dryer isn't as good as a stand alone one but it works fine

I had a Bosch one in a rental a while back. Although not as good as a stand alone drier, it worked much better that I anticipated.

Bosch Serie 6 here - had it 4 years, lightly loaded, and hasn't missed a beat. I'd have to rip out the dishwasher if I wanted separates so it's a no-brainer for me.

Full hot cotton wash and dry can take 5+hours though, as a negative.

Got a Bosch series 6 washer / dryer as well and had no issues in 5 yrs and its heavily used, I had heard bad things as well but its been fine to date, the dryer is condenser both wash and dry work really well. My Bosch dishwasher I had same time and that failed last week I had to fit new heater / pump.

Are there any other types? Seriously though, you can set drying time to whatever. Don’t see much point in bone drying things as they will come out all creased. YMMV
Agreed I mainly do sheets and towels etc in winter to totally dry. For other stuff I just up the spin to 1600 to get as dry as possible that way they hang in airing cupboard.

There is two types of dryer I believe one just uses heat the other some condensing the condensing one actually adds water and needs a drain feed out or water collects in box you empty, they are more expensive, cheaper dryer just heat no drain feed out but needs a vent tube. I don't know the mechanics of them tbh.

I https://www.johnlewis.com/hotpoint-biwdhg7148uk-bu...

I have this one which is a inverter motor, so it’s quiet when it spins but still makes a noise when it’s draining

I find it very efficient, obviously you can’t wash and dry at once, but I find I do 2/3 loads a week

I load it at night, program it on a delay start to wash for 45 mins and 3 hour dry and everything comes out dry and not too creased.

I tend to put a weeks towels in one night, a weeks underwear and bumming around clothes etc and another for work uniform.

Bedding I do have to split into a sheet and duvet cover but now I’ve started taking that to the dry cleaners

I do sometimes just use the wash function and then I have a airer which in my flat at 21 degrees with usally dRy by that evening and other stuff I hang in the airing cupboard

It’s worth spending a bit more to get a decent one, I know people with zunnzuzi in their new builds and they are crap,

The disadvantage with a combined machine is only being able to do one wash or dry at a time.
With separate machines when the wash cycle is finished you shove it all in the dryer, then refill the washer wth a 2nd load, so you then have one load washing whilst the other load is drying.

Also, if a combined unit breaks, you cant wash or dry. With separate machines then at least theres one of them still working.

The only reason to have a washer dryer is shortage of space. We currently have a Hotpoint washer dryer which is used 95% for washing and 5% for drying. It takes too long to get clothes dry so we just put them on drying frames near a radiator. I think next time we will just buy a washing machine and forget about having a drier.

I'd rather not wash my clothes than not have a dishwasher. Good compromise.

We recently bought one as the venting to an external wall was an issue in our new house.
We went for a beko and although it does a good job the cupboard dry wash/dry process it does take 4 hours 20.

First house we had a Phillips w/m and I forget what make through the wall vented T/D. Possibly Creda.

The w/m was excellent quality indeed my brother still has his unit still going strong after more than 40 years. Typical Yorkshireman.

Moved to another house, space an issue, so combined w/d. Bought another Phillips, why not based on experience, some sort of condenser arrangement. Oh my life! It took for ever to do a cycle and with a baby the thing was just running everyday when the weather prevented outside drying. You just couldn't do a cool dry which many modern materials require. Ended up buying one of those small counter top dryers sitting it in the corner of the spare bedroom and hanging the vent tube out of the window.

Now in another place, washer and separate vented dryer. Bosch.

Just asked my Mrs, would you ever have another w/d combined, not enough ************.

Many thanks for very helpful comments.

I'm realising some of the combined units are also a little deeper and in the comedy constrained space in my microflat that doesn't help me. London innit.

Plus the better combined units are a bit more ££ and for whatever reason (maybe the numerous fires) I feel more relaxed about getting a cheaper end washing machine than a cheaper end washer dryer.

Siding towards at a 200-250 [Indesit] washer only and dry stuff hanging (one virtue is things do dry in the flat fast).

Cheers again - this stuff really bores the pants of me, dry or otherwise, so really great to get some input from the collective. Next up a new microbed for the micro second room as need to rent out for the dough!

Onwards
