Had an HPI request come through this morning for a car I bought the wife a couple of years ago. 2017 M4CP Convertible. I bought it as an AUC with 3119 miles on the clock. Car had major problems that neither the dealer or BMW could rectify in 4 mths. Car was rejected and BMW refunded me in full. Someone is now looking to buy it. I assume someone has been able to sort the issues but any doubts, I would advise an independent check before parting with any cash. I have more info if needed. Car was reg. Jun 2017 and had the original plate VA17MPX. Ours was V14STH and has also had T24TDK and W3STU. Looks like it's changing hands a bit more often than you'd expect.

Can you explain why a HPI request would come to you for a car you no longer own/haven't owned for a while I assume?

+1 confused

There's nothing on the HPI website about them contacting previous private owners for information (From: https://www.hpi.co.uk/guides/common-questions.html ) :

Where does HPI Check information come from?

Information provided in your HPI Check comes from a variety of data sources. These include: the DVLA, Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), the Police, The Association of British Insurers, and numerous finance companies.

And I've never received a HPI report that contained any information that would have come from a previous owner.

In addition, there's nothing on the internet about HPI contacting previous owners for information about cars either - Pretty sure if they did, the internet would have quite a few stories about it.

Something doesn't add up!

The letter asked me to go to the link below which I've had a few times with cars I've sold. Normally it's just a mileage confirmation but this one (although it auto diverts to the mileage check site) asked a whole load of questions inc. information about financing, accidents, issues etc. Thought it was unusual but the site checked out. Maybe it's because the car was rejected when nearly new.

NMR letters are quite standard with trade HPI checks and customers can request them.

That explains it, maybe the customer was curious about the number of owners or why it swapped hands after 3/4 mths originally. I'd be very surprised if this sold through BMW as a AUC after it was rejected. Originally the dealer offered to buy it back from us! About £6k less than we paid if I remember correctly. Anyway, got a full refund in the end plus a little Brucie Bonus for our troubles.

Out of nothing more than curiosity (read nosiness) what was wrong with it?

Very loud clunking noise coming from the front wheels at low speed. So loud pedestrians were turning around to see what was making the noise! Never did find out what caused it. Think it had been in an accident as found out the rear bumper and diffuser had been repaired (badly). Two main dealers had the car for about 3 mths, then it went back to BMW. No one could figure out what was wrong with it. Initially, they just thought it was a top mount, by the end of it they'd replaced a truckload of parts, suspension, rack, looked at the chassis, wheels. Absolutely bizarre, everyone was just scratching their heads.

Shame, nice car otherwise lol. Wife replaced it with an i8 which she loves

I think new users have to have a number of posts under their belt until they get e-mail privileges, but the OP should be able to PM them instead.
