All 4 wheels had some scuffing on them & still had the runflats when I got my 335i, so I decided to have the tyres removed so I could respray them before going to non runflats. The tyre guy pointed out they had the wrong valves in, they were normal rubber ones & they don’t fit properly as the rim is hollow & needs a special longer valve.

However they have both rubber valves & screw in it ones for the two types listed, but my wheels have different parts numbers again to the ones there, my rears are 36116779659

I guess I should just ask the BMW parts people but thought I’d check on here first.

Its an excuse to post some pictures of the resprayed wheels too!



The one on the right has just been done in some 203 Lach Silver I had left from my old E34, I like the slightly darker shade, I felt they were a bit too much in bright silver on a dark blue car.



Old wheels bearing on pole meant I could spin them easily for spraying


All lacquered up, left to bake in the conservatory for a few days now. Looking forward to fitting them once I get the valves sorted out.




Not really related but I thought I’d add that a friend who worked in the trade told me the wheels made for runflat tyres have a bigger lip to help hold the tyres on when driving them flat, he was right.

The lip is about 2.5mm high on the 230 rim (made for runflats) & 1.5mm high on the older pre runflat rim. It doesn’t stop you putting non runflats on but could help keep the non runflat tyre on a little longer if you did happen to have a blowout...

As far as I can make out Style 230 wheels were originally fitted to E89 Z4s which BMW only ever supplied with run-flat tyres.

Pre-facelift E89s (2009 to 2014) used the ABS sensors for the TPMS, but facelifts had the sensors fitted in the wheel behind the valve.

So maybe the wheels come from a facelift E89 but were fitted to a car (possibly yours) that relies on ABS sensors for the TPMS.

They do look great though. thumbup

That's very interesting.

Can you (safely) put RFT on non RF rims?

Are there instances of BMW offering the same rim on different models, one with non RFT and the other with RFT?

I think they are the original wheels for my E93 335i but you have got me wondering now!



Bit odd that says they were only from 2008, my car is a 2007! But further down it says they were fitted to E93s from 2005... Even if they aren’t the original wheels they would seem to be E93 wheels.

I think the other part numbers from the link I put in my original post are the wheels for the E89.

The runflat detector was working fine for the short time I had them on the 335i after getting it when they had the wrong rubber valves in so it must work from the wheels speed sensors.

No.

The rim is called EH2+, which means it has the raised ridge, it is that ridge that keeps the run flat on the rim if it has a flat. Without it it will come off.
