Added another 400ml of coolant, so doesn't look like it was the cap that was the issue. It didn't lose any during 10 days sitting at the airport as it was fine on the way home yesterday, but the coolant warning light came on this morning. I can see some residue around the header tank, so I'm think it either has a small leak or the plastic valve is leaking.
Feel like it's punishing me for looking at a new one and running round in a Nissan Note for a few days

BMW expansion tanks often seem to develop small cracks that only seem to leak when the coolant is hot and there is a bit of pressure in the system so it may be that if it isn't the cap.Feel like it's punishing me for looking at a new one and running round in a Nissan Note for a few days

From looking around, it's likely to be the coolant expansion tank as Mr Tidy mentioned, or just another coolant pipe somewhere that's got old and brittle in the 17 years it's been running.
I'll have a word with me mate next week and get him to have a look.
Took it for a run last night getting it up to temperature, temps were solid and checking this morning it's still full of coolant. I also added half a litre of oil, because old N52

Front suspension refreshed; new Sachs shocks, Eibach or kit springs and all new hardware
Will do the rears (inc arms and nuts/bolts etc) on Tues 11th Nov at my pals and then it can be fully set up

Looking good Dan. Are the springs standard sport spec or dropped? Will do the rears (inc arms and nuts/bolts etc) on Tues 11th Nov at my pals and then it can be fully set up

I have some style 66s to go on my E39, it will probably need new shocks and springs too as still on the standard SE kit at the minute.

Personally on an SE, unless you want it as low as a Sport on lowering springs (ie mine on the Eibach); new Sachs Sport spec shocks with either decent used or new OEM springs would be a good way to lower it, but it not be too low
OEM springs can only be bought from BMW, they’re not silly expensive unlike the shocks - the Sachs sport spec shocks (556834 for the I6 and diesel engine salons - fronts, and 170857 for all saloons bar the M5) are c£100 a corner on eBay or Autodoc

They re the Eibach pro-kit springs; so a slight drop over Sport, about 15mm max - on an SE you d get 20-25mm out of them on the Sachs shocks

I can handle the arch gap on the standard SE setup on its style 33s but when I swap the wheels it may look a bit stiltish lol. Not fussed about going mega low, just a bit smarter and close the gap a little.
