Front near side backing plate / heat shield replaced on my F15 X5 40d. These seem prone to corrosion, they get damaged and then rub on the disk noisily. Both fronts have now been replaced

What was on there today? It's my local track, I'm only 15 mins drive away from there.

Part 1 done this morning; part 2 tomorrow

Today: Front suspension and set up:

Once removed they all needed replacing really; the idler arm bush was very loose (discovered the slight knock). The ball joints in the rest were solid to be fair, but the dust boots had split on them all and more or less disappeared on the track rod ends!

Grated my wheels in Waitrose car park, going to get some bits for my mum. So pissed off with myself.

I know the feeling, I did one of mine parking outside the doctors last week.

And not cheap to get a repair done these days. Wife clipped 2 of hers last month and from last time, it was £120 per wheel (diamond cut) and they had the car 2 days.

I remember catching the brickwork with the rear wheel on the garage years back in the 370Z getting it out, and I was absolutely fuming with myself. It was only a little nick, but I gave myself a right hard time about it though, so I know how you're feeling for sure.

Genuine Brembo 2 piece discs; Textar or Jurid pads - that's what I ran on my F01 and they were spot on; zero issues and solid braking

On the subject of two piece discs...

I intend to get my fronts changed along with pads as they showed up as an MOT advisory recently. I'd appreciate thoughts on a BMW independent garage I visited recently, when mentioning two piece discs they said they just need to be ventilated, and they fit Delphi pads.

What is it about them that differs from one piece discs exactly? Are my current discs two piece?

The two piece discs have an Ali hat, so less unsprung weight. They’ll also look less grizzly after a winter too, but coated discs are more common now, so it’s less of a factor.

Thanks, so for my 2014 F01 would the one piece be standard factory fit, and two piece an owners upgrade?

I would think so, yes. Fairly sure BMW didn't offer 2 piece discs as an option on the F01.

Correct weight and proper cooling - nd stay away from Delphi pads; utter crap

Brakes are not an area to cheap out on; stick with decent discs and pads and all will be well

Jurid and Textar make BMWs pads - OEM pads are very good; their aftermarket pads are a different compound but still good. As said; I ran the Brembo 2 piece discs with Textar pads on my 730d all round and they were faultless and very good braking

See:
https://www.hotrod.com/how-to/understanding-disc-b...
https://www.hella.com/techworld/uk/technical/brake...

A single piece disk is where the disk is made from a single chunk of metal.
Two piece, semi floating, floating, whatever are when the disc friction surface and the hat/bell are seperate (but obviously connected) to better withstand the effects of thermal expansion. And to reduce weight.

The giveaway is something on the bell showing a point of attachment - a rivet, bolt etc.

You are going to find that transformed, Dan - did sim to mine recent,y, that always felt really good/ tight - and had my excellent indy go through checking each joint above MOT min reqst last 3-4 years in service ('no play! its great for one of these!') - but once the worn ball joint taper in the steering box arm was found, and I'd sourced a mint used one ... in taking things apart - as one piece was removed, a different degrees/directions of /minor/ play were found, /not/ present when all together-snug. Yes the idler arm bushing was one such (details in 'garage')

Suffice to say - since control arms aleady recent & known-good - I let them crack-on & go through the front end fully, and the result is a joy - transformed in terms of feel, turn-in, precision. Worth every penny / good for many years yet. ATB! M

I agree, I'll look for a garage that can agree to fit parts that I specify, as I guess they would usually prefer to default to their normal brands.
