What a car!

And the sound is just second to none.

To me it sounds better than the M5.

Put a few hundred miles on her. Needs a few more before I can open it up fully. First observations: sounds better than an OPF equipped exhaust usually does, ride is much more comfortable and compliant than the M5 competition. Once its run in it will be interesting to see the dragy numbers it produces.

Lovely car - I saw TRL had shipped one to “phil” on his Facebook page in the same blue. I wasn’t aware TRL had any deals on these.

Looks really great especially in that colour combo.

Same here.

I'd have been really tempted to get a quote on one of these, but probably out of my price range.

OP - If you're happy to share the basic figures in a PM, I'd love to know what kind of deals have been available.

I had wondered how this would work out with the M5 too..

The full fat M cars usually benefit from a higher GMFV where the M-lites are dearer than the usual 20i/20d etc however unfortunately share similar level GMFVs. All this results in high-ish monthlies for the M-lites and FF M cars aren’t that much more expensive. That is, unless the M-lites are discounted to make them make sense.

Must admit the M550i isn’t something I’d considered before but the pics look stunning.

They are nice, grats op, id like to see one with a light interior..

Touring available via alpina isnt it?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202102169...
It is but, as the car you've linked demonstrates, it comes at a price! The Alpina's a lovely car but a B5 saloon lists at well over £20k more than a 550i and, as the discounts are less than on more mainstream BMW's, the real price difference is even greater. The B5 Touring is £97.5k basic which means over £100k once a few options have been added - you're talking RS6 or E63 Estate money so (IMO) the price point is a definite level up from the 550i...

£100k - my goodness - super car or RS6 territory as you say. I know alpinas are understated etc but that’s a big chunk of cash.

Its a good point, was just saying you ‘could’ get an estate in response to the posters Q.

I always look at mapping opportunities before i buy into a next car and noted that the G30 550i responded to mapping better than the M5, stage 1 for the 550 resulted in 680hp, whereas the M5 only got to 650hp, with the extra comfort of the 550 this is a real winner to my mind, just interiors that stop me tbh.

The future me bemoans the fact that this is claimed not to be available in estate form.

Why, is it actually available in estate form?

This thread leads me to believe that only the 540i is available and since this is the only website on the internet I'm bound to never verify this for myself. wobble

UK gets 40i for estate, 50i for saloon.

Europe gets either in either.

I spotted this 540i today. Good on the owner for speccing a bold and interesting colour.

Shame on BMW UK for failing to allow the 550i estate as an option.

600 miles in, few headline observations: Quality is good, better than the S4 it's replaced. I didn't think BMW were in the same league as Audi interiors but I was wrong, not one squeak. Tyres, really low profile runflats on a 20" rim wouldn't be my choice. I don't fancy my chances with the bigger potholes, I think the rims would come off badly. MPG, getting better ad the engine starts to break in, still only 24-25MPG right now.

Looks great, I don't get how BMW have got this so right when the other models look so bad.
Probably 'cause this is a facelift of the existing (good looking) 5 Series. When they design a completely new one to sit alongside their other new models it'll probably look as gormless as the rest of their new offerings.

I don't think they do, there isn't a G31 M550i touring available

I think that's discontinued as well since they launched the LCI.

Why?
Easier as an everyday car ?
Lack of funds?
Better comfort for everyday, slips under the radar, nine tenths the go, sounds much better and can be had for 59k.

I popped into Mercedes yesterday to view the new S Class (after a disappointing Bentley test) and was told by the salesman that its looking like the new C class wont be released in coupe or cabriolet and he’s not sure that the S class will either.

Point being, are we seeing a deletion of some saloon platform derivatives already? maybe not with BMW as much as theyre so behind in EV but still, an estate version of the 550i in RHD has got to be one of their least sold cars alongside the 7er i’d have thought.

Mercedes EQS is next big release for mercedes which will go very head to head with their latest S class and launches their new EV platform, they're resting much of their future on this new platform, not sure what BMW are doing?
