I popped into Mercedes yesterday to view the new S Class (after a disappointing Bentley test) and was told by the salesman that its looking like the new C class wont be released in coupe or cabriolet and he’s not sure that the S class will either.
Point being, are we seeing a deletion of some saloon platform derivatives already? maybe not with BMW as much as theyre so behind in EV but still, an estate version of the 550i in RHD has got to be one of their least sold cars alongside the 7er i’d have thought.
Mercedes EQS is next big release for mercedes which will go very head to head with their latest S class and launches their new EV platform, they're resting much of their future on this new platform, not sure what BMW are doing?
I think if huge M8s and the 7 can attract discounts of £30k (per carwow front page) from RRP, either that RRP is way out or there just isn’t demand for huge and thirsty ICE cars any more. I guess at least an 850i or M8 could be considered a second car / expensive toy with decent looks to match, however I’m not really surprised to see 7ers with that much discount on list and all in plain carwow sight. They been discounting big M cars and 7s like that for the last 10 years at least, car retails are often set at a certain point to make you think you got a deal. Boosted_8 said:
1250 miles, it felt like an eternity but I finally got there. Benchmark numbers are : 0-60mph = 3.9s (3.7 with rollout). 100-200 millimeters per hour = 8.3s. These can be easily improved with practice, a few more miles and by taking all the kiddies seats out etc
I don't think that 10-20cm time is much to boast about...Joking aside, beautiful motor, one of the nicest new BMWs I've seen in a long time
Mine has completed assembly so will hopefully be arriving before too long. I ordered it in March so it's been a bit of a long wait!
I've gone for the Bernina Grey with the extended high gloss shadowline which I think should look pretty good, I nearly went for the blue like the OP's.
It's interesting to get some insight into what they're like to own as they are so rare there aren't many reports to see compared to the M135/140i that I've been used to.

I've only a negative update. Two weeks ago a big pothole took out an alloy wheel (buckled) at a cost of £400 for the wheel and £60 for the geo. The skinny run flats aren't forgiving at all. Its almost like I knew this would happen with the state of the roads...
Next week I should have a positive update with some 'enhancements'.

Added some Burger motorsport 10mm front and 13mm rear spacers to give the car a bit more stance. Also thought while the wheels are off, why not fit the floating centre caps from the 7 series? That idea turned out to be a bit of a ball ache however, as they don't spin freely on the M668 20" wheels. I had to get the Dremel grinding wheel out to modify the pendulum inside them.

I hope that it doesn't create a drone!
I doubt it will cause much. I put a full non-res Milltek on an B9 S5 and although it had some drone it wasnt intrusive. On the motorway it could be a bit annoying if you were doing a few hours driving but day to day it was absolutely fine. The sound was pretty epic to be fair. Lovely car and great colour. I think the 550i is the pick of the 5 series. As impressive as an M5 is, a 5 series is more about luxury, performance and comfort and less about being a stiff track car. (Not that I'd refuse an M5 if offered!) I have the 540i and it's a very impressive thing. The V8 in the 550 adds that big performance uplift and some noise too.
