I think to have a convertible two seater in your fleet is a good option for the sunny days.
It might not be a two seater, but I’ve enjoyed nicking my other half’s 125i can that we bought in January. It sounds great and driving with the roof down is really enjoyable. Even though it’s far from flash, I thought I’d feel a bit silly doing so but I really don’t. Our little boy loves it too.
That is the great thing about 4 seater Convertibles I reckon...because you can take the family out with you. I haven't got enough room for my Mrs and 2 daughters in my 2 seater Roadster though. I guess the flip side of that is that I can nip out on my own and escape the chaos when I get a rare chance though! biggrin

Downside is that it’s a bit breezy in the back (not that I ever get that short straw.... hehe ).

I just like having a cab to be honest, I thought I’d feel a bit silly driving with the roof down but I don’t. I really like (not so much when a bird poos where the food would have been though....).

I think it’s a shame that the Z4 market has shrunk so much. I’m sure I’ve read in the press that it’s one model that may well be axed when this model is done. Shame really. It certainly looks better in the flesh than in pictures.

I've never been in the back of a 4 seat Convertible(I've driven and been a front passenger in my BIL's E93 M3 Convertible though) and I have heard that they can be a bit breezy in the back seats to be fair.

I've also had a bird crap into the car when I've been out in mine as well!

Like you I also really enjoy having a convertible too. It just adds so much to the driving experience I reckon. I really missed the open top experience with the Z4M Roadster I had when I sold it, so I was really chuffed to get another one for sure.

It will be a shame if the Z4 gets axed I agree, and I've always quite fancied having an E89 Z4 to be honest.

The E89 has aged so well to my eyes. I think they’ll be looked back up just very fondly; better than the Z3 that preceded it and a more more resolved design that either of the Z4’s that followed.

A manual 3.0 in grey with the style 107 wheels for me.

Sticks.

17 years in I still have the E85. Don't think the front is its best, but the flame surfacing and 'Z4' sculpted into it make up for that. Mine had 108s when built but I had them changed to 107s and glad I did. Agreed re the E89, I've been thinking about one on and of for years, but I suspect it'll be less of a sports car and having an auto is compromise enough. ETA the 6 cyl ones seem hard to find.

I've been driving 39 years and had a convertible for 28 of them. I guess I like it. 4 seats are not for me though.

Bmw has already stated in someway quietly that the writing is on the wall so to speak last year.

They pretty much said there won't be a next generation for low selling models - the obvious ones sadly meeting that are the Z4 and 8 series.

The fact as well that BMW has decided to not build on the i3 and i8 carbon technology in significant ways should also tell you a lot. The i8 element especially considering the sports element.

The Z4 I do agree feels confused, is it a soft top cruiser or a sports car...hmm. I have only seen 3 in person, 2 of them in the bmw dealer, which should say a lot.

Seems a shame that the i cars haven’t been developed. I liked them but they did feel a bit ahead of their time, especially the i8. The idea of a hybrid car that looebdoike that was bonkers when they were released. It’s a bit more palatable these days.

It would a shame to for another 2 seater to bite the dust but they don’t seem to sell.

Had mine nearly a year and love the car - never thought I would own a BMW but am really happy with it.
Not the fastest or best handling (I have the 3.0 version) but is comfortable, has a great size boot given the type of car, I love the tech in the car and it really does everything I need it to do.
I event like how it looks !

It does, but as wonderful as the i8 may have been, as a long-term BMW owner I just wouldn't want to buy a car that looked so great with a poxy 3-cylinder turbo hybrid power-plant! Same car with an N/A V8 or V10 and a manual gearbox could have been fantastic!

The G29 Z4 is a bit "meh" - not a sports car, not a real looker, auto only and not exactly cheap. I'd rather have a Supra especially if/when they offer a manual option!

Ignoring your dislike of anything with less than six cylinders and a manual box, the i8 was an odd proposal at the time. Hybrids were largely for hair shirt wearing people who hated cars when it was launched, however we’re now very much in the world of hybrids and downsizing. I wonder if it would have been better received if it was launched now? Those who actually own the i8 speak very highly of the .

The Z4 has always struggled. The original one was always bettered by the Boxste (although I prefer the looks of the Z inside and out compared to the contemporary Boxster). If then gained a folding hardtop and they attempted to make it more of a GT but it wasn’t comfy enough. The latest one still comes across a bit confused from the reviews. It’s definitely better looking in the flesh than in pictures.

Some bad news, you don't. Yours is the 30i, which is the 2.0 B48 engine.

Having owned six Z4 in the three different generations, It will definitely be a sad day if they stop producing them. They've all been very different in style, ride and handling. They are no Boxster for sure but that's at least some of the appeal for me. I've had my choice of cars over the years and I love them. Tried a Porsche years ago and while it was good to drive, equipment levels and Porsche ownership just weren't for me. To spec a Boxster to the same level as my current car would cost at least £20K more.

The two seater market is tiny and we're heading back to the early 80's when the MGB died and was the last affordable two seater around. Mazda revived the market with the MX5 (I've owned two of them too) in the 90's and I hope they remain in production if the Z4 goes. At least I will have an alternative to an SUV which is what seems to be the default choice now.

As an MX5 owner (I'm the living PH cliche...), I suspect things will die in the next five to ten years. The investment case for a new ICE sportster / roadster just won't be there given their vanishingly small market in a world of SUVs.

However, hopefully battery technology evolves and the skateboard electric platforms can be shrunk and lightened. Then we'll see them come back. Hopefully, while I'm still driving...

After a Z4 M Coupe a few years ago I’ve returned to the fold and bought the original. Just a smaller engine being the 2.2.
Makes a lovely noise and cruises around beautifully. I love it. Quite rare in Dakar too.

Amazingly I was researching the fate of that car of yours only yesterday as I met its previous owner and his Good Lady (I'm ashamed to admit that I cannot recall their names) when they were staying in Belle Tout at Beachy Head for her 60th birthday about five years ago. I was in my 2.2 and we parked almost adjacent in the Birling Gap car park. I hadn't seen Ragtop on the forums recently so I was concerned for his well-being. I am very glad to see that Daks found itself in good hands at least. How is Ragtop, do you know?

I had a great 4 years with an E89... One of the fully specced 2.3 sdrives. I bought it to keep for a year, always wanted a convertible and had a good look around the reports and tried a few, settled for the E89 as liked the hard top retractable.

Bought it through in Motherwell and that year ended up four years. And I used it in all weathers. It was a fun car indeed.

Only issues I had was a roof sensor, cracked 296 wheels due to those pesky runflats and water ingress to the hydraulic motor.

Id have another and sadly I do feel that these cars are on borrowed tiome now, people are getting bigger, money tighter and folks want one car to do all hence those sporty SUV's that seem to be everywhere. Its depressing when you see carlots with rows of suv's and the like.

Were also seeing the move to battery power, so that means packing problems, a car like a z4 needs to be small and light and fiesty... add in an electric motor... and batteries... it sort of kills it. One of the joys of the Z4 was a nice engine note and a raspy exhaust.

Ironically, I saw four or five new Zed’s whilst I was on my travels today, the nicest being a red one. It looked pretty good to be honest. Would be a shame for them to die out.
