Hi All,

I have a September 2018 BMW 5 Series (G30).

My dashboard is showing service due in September 2022 or 1800 miles. My car has had one service before in 2021 (prior to my purchase) from BMW dealership.

The current mileage on the car is just shy of 21,000.

I do not intend to renew my BMW warranty (at this time).

Now my question is, what service is required for me next? Does spark plugs need to be changed at this time? The mileage is pretty low...

These are the options BMW gives on their website:

Option 1 - BMW - £305
Engine oil service with microfilter*
+ environmental disposal charge + standard scope

This includes engine oil, oil filter, microfilter(s) - how many microfilters are there in my car - how to know?

Option 2 - BMW - £490
Engine oil service with microfilter, air filter & spark plugs*
+ environmental disposal charge + standard scope

£185 extra for spark plugs, how many are there? 4?

Option 3 - Cazoo (found from Bookmygarage.com) - £199
Engine Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter

Is there anyway to know if they will use synthetic oil or just a normal oil? I believe this car requires synthetic oil.

Option 4 - Cazoo (found from Bookmygarage.com) - £199
Engine Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter and Fuel Filter (if fitted externally, if not replace pollen filter)

Can someone please advice what to do here?

Pop into your local dealer and ask them to read your keyfob.

They'll tell you what's due.

BMW is on condition based servicing which varies according to driving style, default settings tend to be 19,000 or 2 years which ever comes first.

From your list option 1 and option 2 alternate every two years /19000 miles

But the service indicator will also illuminate for

Brake fluid change due
MoT due
Vehicle Inspection due every 4 years (visual inspection only ,opportunity for the dealer to upsell).

As the car is approaching 4 years old i would suggest its due a big service and inspection?

BMW offer a "value" pricing on cars more than 3 years old, not much more than my local BMW specialist

Go into the I drive menu, select my vehicle, then vehicle status then service due and it should tell you what is falling due

You can also bring up the service history.

Oil wise BMW specify that it must be LL04 specification...Castrol, Mobil, Petronas etc all produce it

My April 2018 mini just had its 4 year service. Its option 2 on your list above including spark plugs. Very expensive compared to an indie but mine has a warranty on it that runs until car is 6 years old and specifically states that service has to be done by a mini dealer. Without warranty I would have gone to my local BMW indie. He tells me he can also update the service history on the Idrive. Suggest you do a check with a local indie for cost updating I drive may not be important to you as long as you keep invoices.

As your car is low mileage you could take a gamble of wait until end of November in the past BMW have done Black Friday service officers which could be up to 30% discount.

Are they allowed to make such stipulations these days? I thought providing you used OE parts and a VAT registered garbage then they were unable to invalidate a warranty? I know they could make life difficult, but…

I think BMW’s price for an oil change is an utter piss take when you look at how much the parts cost, even buying genuine stuff via Cotswold etc.

MINI wanted more to do the oil change on my other half’s old Cooper than BMW wanted for my M140i despite it having half the engine! Jokers.

The warranty isn't the BMW assured used but one supplied by the dealer I bought the car from- Listers Boston. Can be used at any BMW dealer I took out the 3 year option when I bought the car at one year old. warranty started once Mini 3 year warranty expired. Provider is Call Alert who seem to do a lot of different dealer warranties. No experience so far but it does specify that serviced have to be done by a dealer. . Negotiated 2 year service for free )at any Mini Dealer) However as you say nearly £400 is a piss take for oils, a few filters and spark plugs(at 15k miles!!!) BUT car has a lot of tech on it (for me) and is an early one with the 7 speed DCT. IMO most faults on new components start to come to light at 5/6 years old. So hoping if a major expense it will be covered. - no excess on policy. So apart from one brake fluid change no further dealer 'cost until end of 6 years. Up until month ago thought it would be a waste of money but after recent thread about failure of asain? 8 speed gearbox on 2017 JCW Ive changed my mind. BUT wont know how good the warranty is until I have to make a claim.
