My sister can be a bit of an idiot when it comes to buying cars. I learnt my lesson a few years back that sometimes it is best not to get envolved.
A couple of years back my brother in law wanted to surprise my sister on her birthday as she wanted to chop her beetle in for a passatt 2.0 sport estate. so gary says can you speak to your mate and see if he can get her one. The cockup was that gary asked me to get her a 2.0s estate which was duly ordered in the correct colour. The following Saturday I picked the beetle up on the pre text of showing a mate that might be interested and met a driver from the VW dealership on the M1 and we did the swap. Went round to my sister with her brand new VW 2.0 passatt estate as her present. She wanders around the car but did not say much. so I get her to drop me back home. on the way she says has this got alloy wheels, open the door, no. does it have a cd player, er no it doesn't look like it. so is the the 2.0 litre sport, er no its the 2.0 s (the base model).
she dropped me of and I wrang gary, yes i know you've ordered the wrong car. I'VE ORDERED THE WRONG CAR, you told me what to order.
The outcome, they were offered a grand more in part exchange from their local dealer than I got from my mate up north (seemed a good deal against the basic S model) and we lost £2500 on the brand new passatt with 200 miles on the clock. so effectively the sport cost gary £3500 more than it should have done. The family says it my fault because I know all about cars. Yeh cars I have an interest in but I am not a bloody VW passatt afficiando. Hence I do not get envolved anymore and can you blame me.
cheers Graeme

I love this car, it has to be the most fun i've had in a car, seemed to be a bit hairy than an M3 which is a bit worrying
But will always bring a ) to my face, but a lot of money for a 1-series

A new 130i or a used M3??

I know which one I'd take and it's not the one that ends with an i...

the Z4M Coupe on the otherhand ...

The warranty will be cheaper on the 130i... but I know what you mean.

My Mrs has got a 120d and it shifts ok, but is a lot more chuckable than my 330d.. 3door in black would be stunning.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and you cant "behold" it when you're sat inside so who cares!!??

I am the extatic owner of 1 BMW 130i M Sport. After reading the comments all I can say is:
1) The 130i M sport is beautifull. Both inside and outside.
2) Build quality is top notch
3) The features are amazing. Bluetooth, professional sound, sun roof, electrical windows and a host of other features all work with a finess that I am happy to pay lots of money for. The way everything is integrated impressed me. The climate control works great with features to cool the car down quickly after standing in the South African sun.
4) The straight 6 is silky smooth and very responsive. I am thouroughly addicted and find it hard not to hammer the baby with every pullaway I do... Expensive on fuel though...
6) Steering wheel, suspension and handling is awesome. I test drove the Golf GTI - not for me. I do not like front wheel drive after driving it for 11 years. The 1 series is worth the extra $ without any doubt!
7) I did not take the 18" wheels and opted for the 17" - In retrospect it was a good choice. The 17" look good and is more practical.
8) The 3 seatbelts in the back is great for a small family. I have 3 small kids that I drop off at school every morning and for kids - there are more than enough room. For grown ups - two in the rear is just fine. I am biased, but do not agreee with the complaints about the back seats.
9) BWM refinement permeates everything.

I have had it for 4 days, and am planning a long trip to run in the car. I purchased the 1 series as my work horse. Not meant as a family car. But - the whole family demands that we go on a 600km trip with the BMW 1 rather than the spacious Toyota Previa. Makes sense, sheer driving pleasure ;-)

Thought people might want to hear my long term thoughts on the 130i M-sport as I've had the car since March. Firstly, to all you 1-er haters, don't slate it until you've tried it. Yes, it has challenging looks, but at least it doesn't look like all the other Euro-box hatches that look like they were all designed by the same CAD software!

As for the way it drives, well, it is the most entertaining car I've owned. It feels special even when pootling round town. The gorgeous straight six is tuneful in the lower range, and animalistic in the upper rev range. When you get the car above 4000 rpm, the engine and exhaust note change and it snarls its way through the gears.

Chassis balance is sublime. Take stage 1 traction control off at the touch of the DTC button and it is immensely biddable. Boot the throttle and oversteer is available on tap and is easily caught and controlled. If you take traction control off completely then you have a lairy monster on your hands, and you can easily smoke your way out of each corner, crossed up, with a huge smile on your face.

It does suffer for the lack of a limited slip diff however.

Build quality overall has been excellent. I had two problems however. One: the window seals rattled. Two: the rear seats were loose on the folding "axle" and rattled about. Both were fixed promptly under warranty and BMW service was excellent. Aside from that, it's solid as a rock.

Fuel economy has also been excellent. I average 25mpg in town, and 31-35mpg on a motorway run. For a 3.0l I think this is pretty good.

I for one am glad that I chose this over the Golf GTI. A friend has a GTI and complains that its a bit sterile, clinical and not terribly exciting. For the same price, I've got a six cylinder car, that drives the correct wheels, and serves up buckets of fun on every drive.

It's also far more practical than you'd think. True, rear leg room isn't as good as the golf, but it's far from awful. Flip the seats down and you have a mini estate - I use mine for windsurfing trips and the amount of kit you can get in the car is extremely surprising.

All in all, an excellent package and far more interesting than the GTI.

They are a great car and I miss mine dearly. I hope they continue to be neglected because the prices of them have dropped sharply. I know someone who picked up a 55 plate M Sport with good options from a main dealer for £18k. The car had lost £10k in about a year!

Ive got a 120d at the moment but will look to get back into a 130i when they arrive around the £15k mark.

Once my Golf has been run into the ground I'll be on the lookout for a used 130 or Mk5 R32 I think. Had the pleasure of driving a new 330i - I can only imagine a smaller, lighter car to be much better.

PS. You're on here too !
Any idea what's up with the other forum at the moment ?
