Down entirely to the setup, as above they are the same bike other than the bore/stroke of the engine and (if new) a slightly smaller rear tyre.

Same was true of 748/916 etc, always made me chuckle when journos claimed the 748 handled much better, that said most people use the 180 rather than 190 rear and the 'normal' profile front tyre rather than the 748's 60 profile.

Both demonstrators, both less than a couple hundred of miles on the clock.

I very much doubt either had been ‘set up’.

I also tested the Benelli at the same time – If I had the money, this is where it would have gone as it outhandled both the 749 and the 999. However, as I didn’t have the money, I came away with the Laverda, which surprisingly outhandled all 3

Another thumbs up for the 999. Love them smile

Slightly odd on the advert that he says it lives in the kitchen, but has a picture of it outside with a cover on the floor next to it.

Great bikes, had one for 18 months, I love the inline symmetry of the lights, and styling ingeneral but as already stated a very marmite bike.

Take one for test ride, you know if you will like it, for some it is a long reach from seat to bars, so weight is on your wrists.

Mine had a full termi and PC, sound is just awesome.

Isn't it so that on the 749/999 the seat position can be adjusted?

Only on the single-seater IIRC, the whole seat/tank unit has some backwards/forwards adjustment.

The Bog stock 999 biposto had adjustable footrests, hangers could be moved around on the frame mounts (lots of holes) or at least they did on the facelift (2005 on?)versions with black swingarm and less holy front fairing

The 749 seat moves too - forwards / backwards but not by much. I never changed mine. I think it was only on the single seat unit though.

Ah, that might give the rider a bit of room to get some (marginal) improvements comfort wise.

As a long term 916 owner, I never quite 'got' the 999 looks; always thought it was such a crime after the gorgeous 916/996/998 looks that it was a crime worthy of dialing 999...but I digres ;-)

Like for like a 999 is a better bike to ride for most people than 916/996/998, but it's never going to ogled over when parked!!

I have always had the outlook that any big sportsbike built after the mid 90's is quicker than anyone can realistically use on the road, so buy the one you most like the look of/enjoy...and thats why I still have my 916...:-)

I have a 2004 full carbon 749R in the back of the garage. Lovely bike, looks great and always gets a lot of attention!

Though I hardly use it, find myself on the blade 9 times out of ten...

Wasn't a fan of the looks at first but I think they have matured very well.

Wasnt there quite an update to the 999's in 2004 which apparently makes them a much sounder buy?

I dont like the look of the stock bike at all but the "R"s just look right.

This is a beauty
