Hanging off the bike on public roads..
Discussion
I do shift my arse on the road I don't really hang off like I do on track though.
The same as people think it looks silly I think it looks silly when you see someone in a power ranger suit on a sports bike sitting bolt upright. I don't do it to go faster on the roads, I do it because it's fun enjoyable and I'm young and limber enough to not be static on a bike...
I also do it in the car...

I've started shifting my arse off the seat and dropping my upper body into the corner now but only when pushing on a bit. Just feels right, much more composed at speed. I used to just sit there and steer the bike and it always felt like I was fighting it. When I did my first trackday the guy from no limits spotted it a mile off so I took his advice for the better.
Hanging off though or sticking a leg out seems pointless, the only people I see doing that on the road are people who are desperate to get their knee down, probably round and round a local roundabout while going half as fast as they could be if they just rode the bike how it should be ridden.

Some great responses in here..
I should add that I drop my shoulder and move my head right over (maybe my arse moves a few cm). Admittedly one of the reasons i stopped was the effort involved, but i feel my lazy cornering has got much better now to the point that I feel i can change direction much quicker and within the limits of safety, my cornering speed is about the same.

I did this when I started riding - all the guys in the magazines do it so I was doing it on every bend.
However when on a ride with a senior IAM observer a while later he said I looked like an idiot. While this annoyed the hell out of me I had to agree with him, and now never do it unless really going for it (on the roads this is very rare for me).
On the track of course but I'm sure I'm been overdoing but hey - haven't we all

I've recently started riding, been out with a few mates, all have told me to move about a little more instead of just leaning round bends. Not fully hanging off the bike ala moto gp but just shifting my arse and dropping my shoulder into bends, even when not particularly pushing on the majority of them seem to do it.
If you've recently started riding, I reckon there are more useful things to practice, like getting really good at how to use the vanishing pointGassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
