It's a decent enough surface in there, but it's a bit hit and miss for grip levels. Unlike Swindon Karting which is Tarmac, it's a smooth concrete slab, so the grip is created by a sheen of Oil (actually quite grippy if applied correctly) and the subsequent rubber that sticks to it. In the summer, it's decent, but in the winter it's reliant on there not being much temperature change as that attracts condensation and makes it like ice.
When it's really grippy, it's unbelievable, but when it's a bit slippy, it's crap
cool might try it when the weather and my old bones warm up then ... also the bsb boys will be out racing then rather than using these dates for pre-season testing !

Just got back from the No Limits Phillip Island trip. Wow! What an unbelievable circuit. Some really fast corners and just two slow second gear ones. You barely get a breather each lap. But it was great fun and I really felt my riding improve there, my first time on slicks too!

Organisation was excellent by the No Limits team, which is quite a feat given that they'd never been before. Weather was lovely, warm and dry, and the marshals and other staff were all brilliant. It really was one of the best experiences on track I've had.

If you ever get the chance to ride Phillip Island then do it. No elbow down pics but here's a few of me on track.

Just watch out for the geese! They were all over the circuit but have no fear of anything. I’ve never known anything like it. As one of the marshals said to me, they have no natural predators so are not afraid of anything. They just stand on the track and look at you as you come past at 100 mph just a few feet away from them! They wave the red & yellow striped flag to warn you there's some on the track ahead but there's not a lot you can do if one decides to step out in front of you. Here's a vid one of the guys on the trip took to give you an idea. There were a few birdstrikes and one crash as a result of hitting the carcass of one that was hit by a rider in front. Fortunately the rider was okay and the bike was fixable.

That trip looked mega. I was following all the pics on facebook from some mates who were over there with you.
My wife wants to go to Australia with the family for her 40th in a couple of years, and it just so happens that she saw you could see Penguins at Philip island, so I kinda steered her towards a trip over that side of the country.
I've seen they have a fleet of S1000RR's at the circuit that you can rent along with all the kit most weeks when they run their own days, so I'll try and blag her to let me have a day off being a tourist to ride the track.

Some of the onboard videos I've seen in the last few days make the track look amazing
I saw a few scary onboards of close calls with Big birds too in the last few days.

Spending all that money going to Oz, seems a shame not to experience everything awesome you can, PI included!

Back from Cartagena Saturday midnight.

Good trip, plagued with a few bike issues, and my friends personal car got broken into right outside the hotel. Her camera stolen(it was well hidden).

I got into the 48's which was goal #1. Had more to come but bike issues prevented it.

Really liking my 20th anniversary inspired paintwork.

Highlight was getting to see Jonas Folger blitzing round on an R1.

I did that when I went to Oz a few years ago, at the time the fleet was mainly GSXR600's and it was soooooo worth it .... one of the reasons I didn't go on this trip is I have been before and have a list of circuits I want to do, so skipping this means I can probably do the NL Sepang trip and tick that box ....

As you are going anyway, get it done smile

Great Pics Stu.
Did you ever get anything from the Police about the stuff getting stolen from your mates car ?

Police report for insurance. They didn't seem to be interested though. Apparently only speak English when they wanted me to move the car from the front.

Even the hotel staff were a bit surprised by their attitude.

Morning all,

Quick question for you please - whats the static testing method used at the UK tracks again?

I remember it as being something like 2/3rds of the bikes red line or something like that.

I picked up a 2011 GSXR 600 over in the USA with a full M4 exhaust system that I want to bring back with me when I come back this summer.
I'm slightly concerned that its not going to pass noise regs on the UK tracks though....

Thanks!

It's actually dependant on the track too, so not always as per the ACU regs posted above unless it's a race weekend.
Some tracks have noisy days (ie no sound test) like Donington and Anglesey, and some test on either static or drive by, which will then depend on how far from the track the noise meter is.
Castle Combe, for example, test all bikes 3/4 max revs static at 105db, whereas others will test in line with the ACU regs.
Donington has a drive by limit on it's normal days, which is 98db read from the gantry on the start/finish straight about 10foot away from where your exhaust is, whereas Silverstone test at 102 drive by at three locations around the track, the closest is about 30foot from the edge of the track.
Your best bet is to speak with the trackday organiser in advance and see what sort of testing they have in place
Most TDO's have the noise limits on their websites

Thanks Graeme.

It probably makes sense to get a reading on the bike over here too so that I have a basic understanding of what level of noise the bike is making.

I also saw that sportbiketrackgear.com offer a baffle for the M4 system but I need to check if that is suitable for mine before purchasing.

Just put the final few touches together and got the new bodywork back from the painters for my new race bike for this year before I'm off to Spain in a couple of weeks to mess around with a load of different spring weights and mapping programs. Luckily, I've got someone coming with me who knows loads more about that sort of stuff than I do smile
Then first race of the season is at Donington in March in the NLR 1000cc cup
