Thinking of buying a reasonable set of textiles, that have good amour and are waterproof.
Suitable for winter albeit I will not ride below about 5 degrees.
I think my top is around the £500 mark. I am after a short jacket and trousers to match.

My two questions, are they cheaper now in the so called summer and does anyone have a good recommendation, where and what to buy.

Thank you
David

All I can say is that I've been pleased with my Halvarssons stuff.

I have just bought an Alpinestars Andes set of textiles for about £340.

A really good piece of kit. 2 piece that zips together, integral waterproof lining with removable thermal layer. Quality stitching, lots of internal and external waterproof pockets and uselful "Adventure" style half zip on jacket. Shoulder, elbow and knee CE armour with optional back protector.

Sizing is slightly strange. I am 6' with a 34" leg and 32" waist and needed a Medium jacket but Large jeans to grt the length. Jeans come with integrated braces so no issues.

I looked at RSV, Spada, Buffalo etc and these worked out best; a step up in quality but a good price.

I have the BMW GS Dry Suit. When it gets wet, drys out very quickly to be fair. Never been to cold or too warm, just works really well for me.

Want to say the RRP is about £700-£800; however, if you can find dealer with last years kit (just different colours) you could probably pick up a set for bang on the £500 mark.

I have some Heine Gerrick stuff. It's waterproof by sheer amount of material between you and the elements. Which means it weighs a tonne. They also lack space in the crotch. So if you like the feeling of being neutered whilst wearing a diving bell, I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the replies, I tried these on today and agree the cost and quality against the other options in store this does seem a very good buy. The jacket length is my only concern. Its not a short front like my leather jacket, nor long like a touring jacket, its somewhere in between. I am 6'3'' and 48/50 chest so fit a XXL, I think it was.
Jacket length aside, I need to put it on and sit on my bike, I think they are the winner so far. Have you tried them in the hot weather with liner out ?

Heat is relative but I have worn them in 28C which I don't classify as particularly hot. My subjective assessment is that they were probably slightly warmer than my leathers but perfectly fine. I was sweaty when I got home but it was in slow traffic without all the vents open (amazing what you find after the event!).

The big bonus is the fact that, as the waterproof later is integral, you can just ride in the sudden summer down pours without having to stop for 5 mins to put everything together and then stop again 5 mins later to take it all apart again when the rain stops (repeat for a day!).

I can only recommend Alpinestars as thats all I have had but having worn them through multiple winters, never got cold or wet and even got knocked off in them by a poxy scooterist, jacket length is irrelevant if you are zipping them up .....

Must be from a different range of HG than those I wear which are fine. Of course like all waterproofs you end up sweating like a Scouser in a paternity test so you can't have it all ways...

I highly rate this stuff... the trousers are fantastic! Fit of leathers but with waterproof ability of a textile.

Head over to ebay. There's a ton of hardly used second hand stuff on there from "born agains" that have given up. Stay away from Rukka though as it attracts a stupid premium. It's good gear but everybody knows the name.

I'm a big fan of Dainese kit. Got a £500 jacket last year for £100. I could tell it'd only been worn a couple of times. Looks good and does the job.

I've got a Hein Gericke Goretex jacket and some HG Shelltex trousers, they are both very warm and fully waterproof. The jacket is on the heavy side but only as can be expected for a good jacket I would think. I think the pair set be back about £160 second hand.
Come to think of it, I've used the jacket since April and I've not needed to put the thermal layer in yet.

I got wiped out a few years ago by a bloke changing lanes without looking, indicating or having any sense whatsoever. I was commuting so wearing Richa textiles. I was doing 70 (on the DC) when he clouted me and they held up really well. Obviously they were destroyed but they offered good protection. I had a few bruises and a gashed arm where I went down heavily. I still counted myself very bloody lucky mind.

I commute all year round (in NE Scotland!) and currently wear Halverssons stuff and it's pretty good too. Keeps me warm anyway.

Well as people have said two years ago I'm still incredibly happy with alpinestars andes. They're warm in the cold and cool in the warm. I've ridden through some horrific weather and stayed bone dry so they get my vote!

I had a relatively low speed spill (less than 30mph) but stopped quickly after hitting a sign post or a wooden telegraph pole, I'm still not sure which.

Rolled on the floor a little and had zero scuffs on the gear to show I had a crash and just an imprint on the shoulder pad on my shoulder in bruising for a few days.

Rev-It goretex poseidon top and bottoms that time.

Also high-sided with Alpinestars (forget the model) textiles and rolled lots in those. I broke my wrist but otherwise was without injury from memory. Certainly nothing that was notable and that was 50-ish mph

I certainly have no issue riding in them.

so we think abrasion wise they are up to the job (although not as good as leather, but good enough)

what about the protection (Armour) ? does it move around a lot, or will it actually stay on shoulder etc ?

Most (if not all) of the textile jackets I've worn aren't loose enough for the armour to move around. If you go for a sporty jacket as opposed to a touring one, I don't think that will be a concern.

I've got the RST paragon 5 textiles, was a bit dubious about them as they seemed to have a lot of features for the price but I've been really pleased with them, ridden them pretty much all winter and even in the heaviest of rain i've had no leaks, the neck collar albeit a bit of a faff to put on is great and even when it's been 0 degrees i've only worn a t-shirt underneath on my commute and been perfectly comfortable.

Shop about and you can get some good deals on the Paragon V range.
