But apparently a warranty claim is getting submitted for a new frame.

This seems like a reasonable suggestion. It seems that the answer is to have the confidence to park in places that you aren't technically supposed to, but do it in a way that's considerate of everyone else.

Sorting the QS isn’t a problem and I could just do that myself in about 10 minutes.

I can’t see the frame being structurally weakened in any way and I really don’t want the bike stripped and rebuilt with a new frame. Eff that for an effer!!

Plus if I have to wait on a new frame being delivered from Italy and then the bike stripped and rebuilt at the dealers it will be November before I get the no better built than a Chinese bike (apparently) back and there will be snow on the ground and I’ll have been without a bike all this time. … Double eff that for an effer!!

So yeah, superglue the bolt back in to the shift lever.
Put a sticker over the damage on the frame.
Et voila. Factory fresh.

The exact same thing happened on my 19 with not much more mileage. Left me buggered in France where it came so loose and done all the frame

I kicked off big time and said I'm not one to ever shout 'reject' but I want something done. Piaggio group paid for carbon frame guards and the labour for Colchester to fit. Also the QS was tightened properly and loctited

I could've escalated it but I'm not that kind of guy. It was covered and I liked the carbon look. Then did over 20k over the next couple years before trading in for my 21

I will say for the record - Aprilia are not great for loctiting and I'd recommend checking. My 21 front dash mount to the frame came very loose and I just saved losing the 4 screws that hold it in. I've also had on every model the rear tail unit and/or seat Allen key screws come loose. My 21 right now has lost one but I'll sort on its 6k service

The decision I guess is yours on what you want to do. I personally wouldn't want to replace a whole frame and my bikes become like an old pair of slippers. I don't really like getting a new one running it in etc so for me I was happy with the bike I just wanted the scratch covered

I’m similar to you, I’m not one for stamping my feet and kicking and screaming over something relatively minor.

And like I’ve said above, I really don’t want the bike stripped and rebuilt. And as much as I wouldn’t want a replacement bike and won’t be asking for one , I would prefer that over a rebuild.

I didn’t realise they did carbon frame guards either, but I like the sound of that as a fair compromise. I’m in there on Monday with my Mrs while her 660 is getting serviced, I’ll ask them about that while I’m there.

Ironically I’m pretty fastidious with checking bolts when I give my bikes a wash, I do tend to go around and check them, but I don’t think I’d have picked this shifter up as it came loose during the 200 or so miles that I did on Saturday.

This was what happened to mine while stuck in France





Honestly I was fuming mainly because I couldn't properly tighten it with limited tools on tour

Couple options would be something super cheap like this if you like the ally frame look



Or this is what I did with my 19 which is the same for the 21



I then went on fowlers and bought the Aprilia frame stickers for about 25-30 quid a few months later and it looked like this

Cheers for that Birky.

Not sure I fancy the full carbon frame covers after seeing them pics? I do like the look of the bare ally frame so as much as I dislike R&G stuff, that frame protector might be better for me?

Can’t blame you for going radge after that happening in France either, I think I’d have been a bit more wound up than I am now if it had happened to me miles away from home too.

I was going to fit a set of ARP rearsets sometime soon as well because I just can’t get on with the standard foot pegs and gear shift lever position. This might push me to buy and fit them sooner than I had planned.

I know a guy who makes carbon bits specifically for Tuono's if you're looking for covers and things. Started as a hobby making bits for himself but now makes quite a range of stuff semi professionally and is a bit of a perfectionist so good quality.

Is this the gadgey who’s been doing stuff for Dave Hewson? I’m sure the name rings a bell from somewhere?

I believe so (mentions him a few time on is FB page), I only vaguely know him as a former TDM owner, but what I've seen of his work looks good quality.

Yep agreed and it's why on my 21 I've not gone for it. Thought it looked good on my 16 and 19 but prefer the ally frame on MY21

Only bit I'm going to try is the Aprilia frame stickers. Saw it on this bike and thought it looked nice. For 30 quid if I don't like it I'll just remove plus it saves scratching a bit

Those frame stickers do look well on that bike, like a right copy catting ba*stard, I might be tempted to give that a go myself.

I’ve just been out and reattached everything and the frame damage is only fairly minor so I’m guessing that it only started rubbing a few miles from home.

Damage report has been downgraded from a total write off to a CAT C.

Fun story: Back in 2015 as a uni student I parked my bike outside my building next to the bicycle parking, thinking I was being clever and avoiding the pay and display. I was given a ticket. I argued that my licence category was technically 'bicycle' and not 'motorcycle' (which I think it was when you still had to display a tax disc). No go. They maintained I still had to pay the ticket. I never paid it. I moved house and never heard from them again. Other than that I'd been fine parking on wide paths so long as I didn't block pedestrians.
Best bet is to ask a parking attendant/traffic warden if one is nearby when parking, especially when it's a private car park. They're normally pretty chill people if you aren't calling them names

I parked by the bicycle parking outside Guildford library some years back, and came back to the bike to find a yellow bag stuck to my tank with a ticket inside...I was prepared to be bloody annoyed about the fact that it said "bicycle" on my tax disk, but instead of an fine/NIP/whatever, the traffic warden had written on the ticket that this wasn't a motorbike parking area and please don't park there again, which was nice.

Anyone ever successfully applied a numberplate with Gorilla tape? I didn't want to screw it in place and thought Gorilla must be about the strongest tape you can get.

I wouldn't worry about it on a car but in this particular application it will perhaps be being 'pulled' by the wind to some extent.

Lack of taste, trendy tt, legality, blah blah.

No idea about gorilla tape - does it have foam on the middle? But you do get double sided tape for number plates and I’ve used that for years and it’s totally secure. To the extent of you do want to take the plate off it’s a real bugger with a Stanley knife blade or bend/break the plate.

It's not the foam type, but it's a 2-3mm thick and soft, so similar. I considered the numberplate tape but I thought this might be even better than that. I'm hopefully off for a ride in a couple of hours so will update.

I've been given a bike, which is very nice. (I mean the gift is nice, not necessarily the bike!)

Sub 10k mileage.

Mate passed his test in 2009, rode it a few times then parked it the underground parking at his flat. Estimate it's not been ridden since 2010 and now he just wants rid.

Problem is that it's in an underground carpark, with a flat battery and tyres in central London.

Thinking simplest way is to arrange a bike transporter to meet me there, pump up the tyres and roll it into the van, right? Then get it home, do full fluid change, put on new tyres and then get MOT.

I need to put some money into house extension, so current plan is to sell my Multistrada 950 and replace with this cheaper alternative.

Sound like a plan? Only issue is that I bloody love my Multistrada!
