Don’t be too tough on yourself MTB, it’s a pretty tough class with a lot of fast guys! Was down watching yesterday, pretty good racing all through the classes!

Few pics from Cadwell with NoLimits Racing this weekend

Qualified 9th out of 38, then finished 12th, 15th, 15th and 10th. Could have done better, suffered with arm pump a lot although changed my bar position for the last race which helped massively, and need to be more aggressive on the 1st lap. But kept it in one piece which isn’t too bad

You had mint weather for racing. I was stuck at work Sunday wishing I was out on my bike at a track somewhere frown

It rained overnight so the track was damp Sunday morning, and was spitting before and during one of my races. Not enough to wet the track but enough to get on your visor and mess with your head! Not helped by someone losing the front at the hairpin in front of me on the first lap

What class was that George?? What kind of laptimes were you managing compared to the winners?

Club 1000. The winners were doing 1:34s, I was doing 38s although if I add my best sectors up over the weekend I’m in low 37s, so something to aim for when I go back there

As promised here is my race report thingy. Round one of the Scottish Championship in the F600 class, my second race event. Be prepared for lots of racing excuses.

I showed up on Friday after work and spent what seemed a life time getting my tent up and setup. It was raining and foggy as hell, I went out on the newly relayed surface to find the car racing from weekend had covered it in mud, it was bloody slippy. I was quite happy it was wet and miserable, how I like it on track, having not ridden since September I managed to sort the niggles on the bike during this time and didn’t bin it. I had no one to talk to so got pished and that was that.

I had a pretty rotten sleep in the back of the van #Racing excuse 1, I woke up, signed on, fed and ready to go out for practice, it was wet and all went well until a yellow was waved on the main straight. The chap in front lifted right off and braked, I nearly rear ended him, the front locked a bit, started to tuck, foot came out and I prepared myself for a bad fall at 100 ish. By the time it had started it finished. That was scary.

Qualifying – paddock was wet, track damp, impending rain, laziness to change wheels #racing excuse 2, resulting in me going out on wets, big mistake. It was bone dry when I went out, oh well. Qualified 21st out of 29 doing a 1m01 on wets.

First race – changed to dry tyres, ready to go, bike has a spluttering issue # racing excuse 3, at low revs from removing the exup by fitting the street exhaust I think. I had to dip clutch on the line a fair bit, poor start, all seemed to go well until I got the pulsing of brakes at every corner # racing excuse 4. I could have came in but tried my best to cope with it. Rather horrible to be honest, but I finished 21/29. So I technically never lost a place but people crashed but I did overtake someone I’m sure of it. 59 secs best lap – ste.

Race two – DNS, Rather than rush around fixing this before the next race, being grumpy and exhausted, I worked out I could still make the football if I drove like a mad man with my mate, so I jumped in a Honda Jazz and this was fastest I’d been all week to make kick off.

Later that night I had a few beers and tried sorting the brakes, flushed them, checked pistons, etc. I retired rather pished after just a few beers only to get an even worst nights sleep #racing excuse 5. Woke up late, rushed around like a mad man, went out for practice. I could not be fked with this so early. I literally walked around, I hadn’t got my breakfast, my tea, a ste nor even a bloody fag yet. #racing excuse 6 not race prepared.

Race three – Went out thinking the brakes were sorted. I had to start at the back of grid for this one due to my DNS. The brake shudder appeared again, I over took some then as I was getting lapped by the leader I was rudely cut right up at the chicane with nowhere to go, bloody madman. I braked, sat the bike up and went for a trip through the gravel, I kept the power on leaned back, thought I’ve saved this then got over the brow of the hill to find the run off was no more and there was a tyre wall. Tapped the brake to go down and tried to as gracefully as I could but my leg got rattled into the peg, through my leathers and I was stuck under my bike till a friendly marshal helped me out. if that had been a trackday you'd have been raging, but it wasn't so no complaints, a better rider would have said it I probably made a of it, got to learn. Very little damage, broken brake guard, bent stuff, so I tried to ride it back only to fall when I went to jump back on it, having put all my weight on my dead leg it just went fk you and folded, that was embarrassing. Dumped it with my dad for him to fix the few bits and he kindly did. That was a huge help tbh, I’d have struggled to do all this myself.

I had planned to go for a sleep during lunch, instead I spent two and a half ours walking up and down knockhills straight about 20 times #racing excuse 6 to go to doctors, get my helmet checked, get this signed, push the bike for scrutineering again, walk to get wheels changed, change wheel. I was ed, I barely got a smoke in. So when it came to race 4 I could have happily sat this out.

Race 4 – started 22nd, finished 22nd. Again another pish 59, bloody rotten. I was fked come the end of it my leg from the crash was killing me #racing excuse 7. Nothing much happened tbh.

Race 5 – Think I started 22nd again, finished 22nd again, all I know is after 2 laps I’m breathing out my arse. #racing excuse 8, I’m not bike fit or fit for any matter of the word. I was sore and just wanted to go home. Then the fun began of packing it all up. I got home and was in my bed sleeping for 9pm.

All in all a bloody miserable weekend, the bikes getting old and I need a replacement after 12 years its getting on. I’m slower than last year, I don’t like riding in the rain, that was the first time I’d ridden knockhill in the dry for donkeys, I kept using all my wet braking markers as its been that long. I could go on. I thought that’s me done, I enjoyed about 5% of the weekend, I didn’t want to ride a bike for months, I could barely walk after this and my crash, then sat at work on Monday I’m looking at the next event thinking “I quite enjoyed that” wtf.

I’m under no allusions, I know I’m st, but I can do much better so I’ll try another couple this year before getting a new bike and just try work on my dry stuff. In the wet I’d have loved every minute of it. I need to get fit though, I’m gonna cut out the 5 or 6 takeaways a week, I’ve been eating veg and everything with my turkey dinosaurs and I might even ditch smoking.

To be fair you went out and did it and I’m sure at some points of the weekend you did enjoy it.

I think if you sorted somewhere decent to sleep and didn’t get pissed each night you’d probably feel better on the bike.

I remember that day you came to oulton a few years ago and was amazed you managed to get round the track and drive home without crashing despite hours worth of driving, red bull and no sleep.

Good write up. If you’re going racing you need to be a bit more committed though. I’m never going to set the world on fire, but I try to get reasonably in shape and do some fitness work.

Anglesey in June with NLR? I’m booked on to do the sprints and endurance there.

Agreed, my fitness has went to fk, i've gave up playing football and in the lead up to this I was doing 60 hour weeks at work, having takeaways every night and lunch and smoking a 1000 fags in a month with 2-4 hours sleep a night. Apart from getting my hole this was as active I've been in a long time, and even then I'd still be wearing an orange bib looking for signatures. It was the annual kick up the arse I need fitness wise.

I appreciate it's a long shot, but you're welcome to have a look at my 2013 GSXR 750 if you're interested mate.

Not trying to be pedantic but he might struggle to race in the 600s with a 750.

Eventful weekend with NLR at Donington this weekend. Just managed to get a engine fitted in time for the test day on Thursday. Only to get there and find there was a slight oil weep from a bolt that was covered by the frame, didn’t get more than an out lap in all day. Dropped the engine out again and fixed it Friday. Straight into qualifying on Saturday morning, went out thinking it would all be good, but a mist of oil on my boot again... turns out the pulse cover was the cause of the oil mist all along. Took that off, saw there was a hairline crack in it. Tried to get a spare at the circuit but no one had one, managed to find one at a BMW dealer not too far away so raced over there to pick it up, fitted it, then got out for race 1. Started 38th, got an ok start and made up a load of places, then someone crashed in front of me at Melbourne and pushed me wide to avoid the bike and rider, then just couldn’t really get any clear track and was stuck in a gaggle of riders all trying to overtake each other at every corner, making it difficult to get past any. Finished 21st which was st, but was 14th on the grid for Sunday.

Then did 2 stints in the endurance, did 24-25 laps each stint and was doing consistent 41s with a best lap time of a 39. Was happy with that as we had no chance of winnng anything and had never ridden on Pirelli’s before.

Got a shocking start on the sprint race on Sunday, again struggling to get past people. Eventually finished 16th.

Determined not to get another shocking start I set off just before the lights went out in the next race, pulled the clutch in, stopped then went again. Still got a 10 second penalty which seemed harsh as I actually went backwards on lap 1. Crossed the line in 13th but the penalty put me down in 16th.

Last race was 10th on the grid. Got a good start and was up to 6th, dropped to 7th after a bit but was comfortable running consistent 1:38s and managed to get into the 37s on one lap which I was really pleased with. Then coming out of McLean’s on lap 9 there was a misfire as I remembered i only put 5 litres of fuel in and not the 7 I normally do as I got distracted half way through. Pretty much coasted the last lap trying to short shift everywhere, had 7 seconds on the guys behind me but 2 overtook me at the Melborne loop, then one just beat me to the line. So finished 10th, not ideal but some positives to be taken from it. Set the 5th fastest lap in that race and closed the gap to the front from previous races. Won’t make the fuel mistake again either!
