Seems the moped mounted thieves will stop at nothing to have your bike away.

Hopefully they throw the book at the tt who was caught and make an example to others who think that throwing corrosive liquids in order to steal a relatively low value moped is acceptable.
somehow doubt it though

"Shadow Home Secretary and Stoke Newington MP Dianne Abbott responded to news of the attacks tweeting: "More terrible acid attacks, Why would you scar someone for life just to steal a moped.""

Well that would be because if you use a moped to commit a crime, including stealing another moped, your chance of being caught is low. This is because the police are investigated in the minutest detail if force is used or if a criminal is injured whilst being apprehended. The factor of 16 increase in moped related crime in London over recent years is a symptom of this.

Make the police impotent. Sow the wind; reap the whirlwind.

Because we let them.

All delivery riders, etc. must now be given a full face helmet and instructed to ride visor down.

5 attacks in one night is too many to ignore.

Over to you HSE.

Why would you scar someone for life for anything Dianne ?

Would it be OK if this was for a £4m diamond ?

Is she totally out of her depth ?

Its an extremely low risk though, given no one is even trying to send them to prison.
Yes, the surprising thing about this is the crook was caught. Probably because of multiple crimes within 90 mins, so something had to be done. If they had toned it down to one acid attack and one moped theft every few days, then you can expect the chance of them being caught not to be far off zero. Why should individual police risk their career or criminal prosecution by attempting to apprehend moped criminals?

Maybe they will claim they are travellers - then they can do whatever they want with zero expectation of any legal comeback.

Every time she opens her mouth (or her Twitter), I detest her a little more.

They need to change police policy so that they're allowed to pursue the little fkers. If it gets them killed, good riddance.

The only debate about it should be how to minimise the risk to everyone else - and if they're running around chucking acid at people, "not pursuing them and letting them get away" clearly isn't doing that.

Well done bbc, a story about a motorbike theft with almost no mention of motorbike theft.
Again their favourite politician is seemingly surprised to hear about a crime that has been on the increase for months.
I can't help thinking she would be one of the first to criticise any change in policy to make it easier to clamp down on these violent thefts.

The rise of acid attacks is disturbing but it's just the current popular tool, focusing on acid attacks and ignoring the violent theft and how to catch them will just have them switching to a new weapon when acid is harder to come by.

Ban acid.

Yeah, that'll fix it!

As said, dumb fk, completely out of touch loony lefties being reported upon by dumb fk completely out of touch loony lefties, with an anti 'real world' view of everything.

Diane Abbott is a hateful figure who believes that every minority group is more important than anything else - basically. So ISIS is great.

It might be the "in vogue" weapon of choice, but there's many other household items which are probably more available than sulphuric acid and possibly even more dangerous.

So it could be an ongoing issue if appropriate measures regarding sentencing and police aren't taken.

There is ample scope to lock crooks up already. It's not like sentencing guidelines were suddenly relaxed, so moped crime became attractive and increased by 1600%.

Instead the willingness to investigate and prosecute police who chase criminals and the willingness to save the criminal from injury while they are running from the police has changed.

Moped theft seems like a good career option to me if you are a young thug. The chance of being caught is very very small. The thug in OP was only caught due to going a bit OTT over an hour and a half.

Another MP was on the radio earlier suggesting licensing acids. Then they'll just use caustic soda. Ban that as well too, I expect, so you have to call a licensed plumber out to deal with a blocked sink. Once they've banned all the caustics, they'd better look at banning sugar and thermos flasks.

Alternatively, how about catching the people who do it and giving them the maximum sentence for GBH with intent (that would be life).

I know this is about low-life stealing mopeds but what is this twit on about?

Labour MP for East Ham Stephen Timms said
"We could certainly come up with arrangements that would allow people to use sulphuric acid in the normal way"
