Agreed; nearly bought one myself before I settled on the Brute.

With the titanium Akro can on, they sound incredible. Taking out the baffle gives it some dirty looking blue flames on the overrun as well cloud9

One of the most fun, grin inducing bikes I have ridden in many years. I can see why they are so popular. If I wasn't racing and still riding on the road, I would have one of these in a heart beat. Only thing it does need (in my humble) is better suspension and a less snatchy throttle. That aside, bung an Akro system on it and marvel at that engine. Epic bike.

Has the "snatchy throttle" issue not been resolved now?

I was at the Yamaha dealer the other day and he was quite keen to say it was no longer an issue on newer models?

Then again they do always say all the problems are sorted when you're looking at a new bike!

I find it quite amusing how people jump on the bandwagon. I took the MT09 out when they first came out and didn't find it snatchy at all. I thought the rear shock could have been better and that was it.

Some people love to hang on to every word a journo says as though it's gospel.

This isn't specifically pointed at you Prof, but there is only one way of finding out how a bike goes and that's not by reading about it in a glossy magazine

As for the engine in the new bikes, it is fundamentally the same but has been refined over the last few years. It really is a peach of an engine

No I understand, I didn't mean to imply I knew either way, the salesman just volunteered it to me a few days ago so thought it was relevant to the criticism.

I rode an MT07 all over Los Angeles for a weekend - it was nice.. could have done with stiffer forks and a more comfortable seat but thats all I could find to complain about..

That's a long way to go for a test ride

The MT09 I have been using is a 15 plate, so not the latest model. As for a snatchy throttle, I don't think I have "jumped on the bandwagon" with this. I did find it snatchy in all three modes, more so at lower speeds. As I say, for me I would have a full suspension set up (probably with new rear shock and fork internals) and a full remap. That aside, I love the bike. I have also spent many hours on the latest R1 and would take the MT09 over that any day.

I was interested in one but the snatchy throttle issues put me off.

You should try riding one. It's not like riding a Honda. These are built for fun

I have the xsr900.
Think it's great, throttle not snatchy on this model.

I'm looking at choices for the rear shock, but in no rush it's not terrible but can tell where the money has been saved.

Had a go on an early MT-09 and throttle in STD and A mode is far too snatchy, slightly better in B but then too dumbed down in power terms.

They modded it for the MT-09 Tracer and STD is much better but around town and cruising down the motorway then B is still slightly nicer and you get used to flicking it between the two. It needs cruise control really. A mode is okay for riding like an eejit however.

Rode an XSR900 and loved the throttle response and style of the thing but naked bike riding position didn't do it for me. Suspension is also v basic and I almost put a new demo bike into a ditch due to a tankslapper.

I then bought a a MT-09 Tracer brand spanky new (big deal for me - previously bought a new bike in 1997) last year and lived with the throttle response. Suspension started to annoy but I eventually sold it as comfort for both rider and pillion was worse than my 1998 R1. Yes I did buy the flipping optional 'comfort' seats (no different at all).

Not ridden the latest aggressive looking model MT-09 , I'm veering towards giving up on the road after all that. Latest R1 & GSXR1000R covered with dodgy race fibreglass seems more appealing.

As has been said - that 900 3 cyl is a beautiful engine for the road. Give us that in a semi sporty chassis with nice styling, quality suspension and the XSR900 mapping = heaven. Possibly too late for me though.

I think you should buy one, or better still get someone else to buy it for you.

This is all subject to you understanding that
1. It's got a snatchy throttle
2. The brakes are crap
3. It's got a snatchy throttle
4. The wheels all fall off every time you ride it
5. It's got a snatchy throttle
6. The chain will rust and chop your feet off when it inevitably snaps
7. It's got a snatchy throttle
8. The seat is an ejector seat and will launch you to the moon if you go anywhere near the snatchy throttle
9. It's got a snatchy throttle

Finally, despite all of the above, the one overriding thing you need to be awatpre of is that it's got a snatchy throttle.

The XSR doesn't have a snatchy throttle at all (and I tried very hard to provoke snatchiness).

And I'm told that the same map is used on the MT09 now.

That was my understanding.

I didn't like the riding position on the mt09, the xsr has more room.
I'm 5ft 11.
The seat is high, compared to the mt09 but I would suggest people go and have a sit on one.

It also has a oddly tight chain slack recommendation from the factory.

This seems like pretty sound advise and given what Ive read too I would say play it safe and buy something with carbs and a cable - none of this modern fly by wire stuff. All sounds a bit scary...
