Martin and Honda part ways?
Discussion
Having just read his autobiography he doesn't sound particularly bothered whose bikes he rides, who sponsors him, or even whether he races or not. I like the guy, and he certainly has a very down to earth attitude, but he sounds perhaps a little too blasé about everything to do with bike racing.

Odd, I just read it and at the end end he spends quite a bit of time saying that he had bigger offers but wanted to stay at Honda, where he had been for quite a few years?Caddyshack said:

Sorry, got the wrong end of the stick, I have just read the John Mcguiness book and got confused...ignore my previous post....though it was better to add this than edit and delete the previous. The Mcguiness book is ace by the way
No worries. I might check out the Mcguiness book myself.I saw them TT clips where Guy was talking about the Honda gearbox, definitely seemed shook up in a big way, but having binned a bike at 160+ mph might do that to a guy.....

Binning the bike at that speed they generally aren't that arsed about, not knowing why it's spat him off is entirely different. I doubt many riders fall of at 160+ and "aren't arsed about it". He broke his back in one such crash, got well burned in a huge fireball in another. If it were me I'd have shat myself.

He knows exactly what happened, the gearbox hit a false neutral. I think he said it had happened in practise too. He was not a happy puppy with the Honda gear box.

You know what i mean you bugger. I doubt many riders fall of at 160+ and "aren't arsed about it". He broke his back in one such crash, got well burned in a huge fireball in another. If it were me I'd have shat myself.
They didn't know what was wrong with the box hence him not wanting to ride it again.
Crashing is part of the territory so not arsed about it is a figure of speech.

I did get the distinct impression he was not saying all he actually wanted to say.

I get the point. Not being able to trust your gearbox won't give you a false neutral would make me not want to race it (as if I could!) If something broke, make it stronger, rider error, don't do that again, but a mystery like that wouldn't sit well.
Reading the book, he is talking about doing 195 along some stretches........ almost enough to make me give up riding altogether! And doing it with a dodgy gearbox.....no thank you.

He's just realised there is a LOT more to life, and living, than racing motorbikes. It isn't the be all to him, rightly so.2wheelsjimmy said:

He actually prefers to be spannering on trucks, by the sounds of the book. Plus he does mention other riders who have nothing in their lives, and when their racing days are over, they are empty.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
