Yup Versys' handle really well, ask Mr OCD, they are great on B and C roads, and anything but boring, the V Strom isn't as good on the road due to the 19" front wheel.
I dont have many year of riding experience, but if I am looking from something to ride on curvy country road, I have yet find anything better than old Multistrada 1000/1100, yes it is ugly, but this bike just amazing on those road conditioni have always trying to find a replacement, have try DL-650, F650GS, TDM900, VFR800, but just not the same

I am in same (similar) boat as OP with mod 1 & 2 booked for next month - finger crossed on passing.
Looked at both bikes and the Street does stand out for me but the low ride (I'm 6ft 2) and mahoosive insurance premium - almost double the MT07 the Street is looking to be off limits for me.
FYI premimuns were MT07 £506 Street £985.
Not sure where the OP lives but with me living in Greater London (decent SW16 postcode, locked garage and secure parking at work) the scrotes seem to have a penchant for the Street and looking like a no go.
Just my 2p worth

I do feel for you regarding the premiums in London.
Don't know your age, but I'm 45 and live in an ok part of the West Midlands.
Street triple insurance comes in at £400 and an MT07 £260.
I know people are saying that the Street triple is the much better bike, but as a newbie looking for a first fun (and relatively cheap) bike, not interested in top end speed, the MT07 seems to fit the bill perfectly and also will be about 3 years newer (2016/17), lower mileage than a street and fits well within my 5K budget (probably with extras and an aftermarket exhaust already fitted)

Whichever one you chose, you'll have a blast anyway, buy the one you like the most.
I can't ride either of my bikes anywhere near their capabilities so I chose them on what excited me.
On the mt07 the dealer option fit Ti Akra sounds sweet with the baffles fitted, downright antisocial without!!

Have you considered other options.
Kawasaki Z800, this is what i have as my first bike more the performace of the street triple but with much cheaper insurance. (throttle goes both ways and they really arnt as intimidating as you might think for a first bike, very easy to ride)
There is the Suzuki GSR750 as well.
Unless you know you want to change in 12months time i wouldnt go fot the MT07 i see them more as a 500 equivalent. and i know most get them as a starter bike and get rid after 12 months and get something with a but more power. Like the ER6n's of old.
All personal opinion of course.

BTW OP I have also considered CB650, GSR 750 & FX8. For these bikes the premiums are circa £450 to £560 .

Had not considered the Z800 due it being a 800cc bike, thought maybe too much for me and insurance would be really high..
Looks amazing though and you are right, insurance is pretty good too at £296. So not much more than the MT07 and seems a good 2015/16 can be had for around £5.2K.

I had a z800 as a courtesy bike for a week when my ZX6R was in for some warranty work. It wears it's weight really well, and is very easy to ride. However it does have a LOT of balls down low, nearly caught me out riding it in the wet, as i decided to roll on the power coming off a roundabout. My fault though, as i exited the roundabout in the samei would on my Ninja which has half the torque at low revs. The rest of the time i had it i loved it though.Can I ask me being a newbie, did you find the weight of the Z800 ok when you first had it as a new rider? Seems a great bike for the money.

We raced in Moto 2 but they have a Kawasaki Z championship support series so well, you're already there so why not?

The Z800 isn't a bad choice, and fairly cheap now. I ran one for 18 months, never really noticed the weight at all. Bear in mind that they don't have any traction control, or any electronics at all, ABS was an option not a standard fit when I bought mine. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but even I, captain cautious, span the rear wheel a few times on a damp road.

The only thing more st than the bike was the dealer. Which is not unusual with Triumph by all accounts.
Went back to a slightly older Blade afterwards which reminded me just how good they are.

Sorry for the late reply. They are a heavy bike compared to the competition but when moving you just dont notice it, its very well balanced and feels light and nimble.Can I ask me being a newbie, did you find the weight of the Z800 ok when you first had it as a new rider? When pushing it around though it is a bit of a lump but i havnt struggled at all, mine is a 2016 wil ABS.
I havnt had any issues with the wheels spinning but i have been taking it easy learning the original Dunlops get some stick for being a bit rubbish but i havnt had any problems (im probably not trying hard enough)
Honestly a great bike for the money, good for learning and taking it easy, with enough power to keep up with everyone as your confidence grows.
