Looking at X5’s

Seen plenty of well spec’d 35d out there with 80k or more miles that fit my budget, but then again seen a few v8’s that have a great spec and aside from the mpg are slightly cheaper by a couple grand and shout out they are more simplistic eg no turbos just a great big lump of v8ness

So if you were looking at a 2008 or newer would you go down the diesel or petrol route for these....

How many miles do you do a year?

Unless it's more than 10k pa I'd consider either, but whichever is in the best condition for your money.

V8 no brainier unless doing high miles.

They’re far from problem free though.

I like I6, but this may be the last chance for a V8.

As someone has already pointed out, the V8 is far from fault free.

Personally a car like that is suited to a diesel engine.

A V8 would no doubt sound nice but would be eye wateringly bad on fuel and hard to justify for the average performance when mated to such a heavy car.

I think I'm in this camp too, I had a X5 4.8iS and while I loved the noise it made it wasn't especially quick and it crippled me in fuel bills. I used to get 12mpg out of it on my commute!

I've also had a 640d(35d engine) and that's a lovely torque filled engine and it will suit the X5 nicely I reckon.

If someone gets to the point of looking at a V8 in an X5, they’re most probably at the point where nothing else but a V8 will do, regardless of suitability. A proper petrolhead, like I was when I bought my 550i.

This is a good point and I really wanted my V8 X5 4.8iS, I loved the 17 months I had with it and it's still the favourite V8 engine I've had. Although I'd still argue that it's wasted a little in the X5.

I do around 12-15k miles a year.

Reason to purchase is because i need to lug a caravan around and our VRS estate doesnt have the weight.

Looking to spend circa £10-15k and get as new as possible but with good mileage and spec (pan roof is a must)

V8's (for obvious reasons) of similar spec to a 35d are in some cases £3k to 5k cheaper.

Im guessing pulling a van around will need torque and a V8 may not be the optimum choice regardless of how nice it sounds smile

As per my moaning in my own thread, the V8 isn't worth the hassle in this type of car IMO.

The 35d engine will be suited to this car. No doubt it has its own issues but the normally aspirated V8 isn't the comparatively trouble-free alternative you'd maybe expect just due to not having turbos or a DPF etc.

35d engine is much more reliable than the 4.8i. M-Sport spec makes them handle much less barge like than some suggest, air suspension makes them handle as good as a 5 series. 35d engine has more tuning potential, which comes with its risks as well when going over 330hp. The engine being equipped with two turbochargers places less stress on them both. No point getting the 30d in my eyes unless you really need better MPG, at 12k miles per year it isn't any different. Have heard of coolant leaks with the V8, as well as oil burn issues, valve stem issues. Avoid unless you have a good mechanic in my eyes.

There is no doubt that these are cars that are made for driving. Steering is sublime and has more feel than a 3 series has today. The power is absolutely great and the engine almost sounds like a V8 when at 2k rpm wink These give a Porsche Cayenne a run for its money with their performance, they really do stay flat when cornering on the A6 up near Buxton. They therefore feel high performance in terms of suspension, and thus has firm suspension, even with air suspension in the rear. 20" wheels do not help as well.

Facts are facts. The 35d is a 286hp (stock) 2.1 tonne SUV which can carry 7 people up to a true 155mph and do the 0-60 sprint in 6.6 seconds, whilst handling like something much smaller. You really wont go wrong with one of these. Just make sure you can park the thing, they're massive, we learnt the hard way a few times. Also make sure it's got the correct tyres!

In both mine I found the engines reliable , it was the rest of the car that wasn’t eg electrics , alloys breaking . Seemed to start falling apart after 80k miles
