Some companies are advertising petrol tank dent removal which does not damage the paint.
Does anybody have any experiences, good or bad, of this type of repair?

Depends on the dent. Can you post a picture up?

As long as the paint isn't cracked, you can pull it out with a glue-on thingymabob.

They're on eBay for less than £20.

There are company's like dent devil who go around car sales removing dents with rods they use to tease out the dent by living the area behind.
The glue gun method can be effective but the cheap kits are limited as to how much dent can be removed.
Reason being the pads are limited to a flat round one or flat diamond shape, the better kits have more pads of different sizes and shapes even curved to give a better contact area.
I've got a wurth kit (professional quality) that's got about 20 different pads and tools to do a good job.
But I've had problems on petrol tanks were the paint looked ok but when the dent was lifted with the glue pad, it's pulled away the paint 😵.
