Yeah I think it is one of the first ones. I’ll have to check the vin. I saw it advertised on gumtree about five years ago and drove from Birmingham to Southampton to collect it in middle of November. I’m the third owner and it has good history with it too.
The belly pan fitted was from a later model but I’ve managed to recently source an original one and my rear indicators are not the right ones either so I’m looking for some original ones to come up.
Are the indicators the same as a Thundercat?
If so i may have a set in my shed.
I'm pretty sure a lot of Yamaha indicators from that era are all the same, some just on different-length "stalks". I had to replace the non-working, 2-bob LED ones mine came with, there are usually plenty on eBay, I can't actually remember which bike they were supposed to be for but they fit & look fine.

I'm 99.9% sure they are the same as the ones on my Thunderace.

OE indicators are available new and are not expensive.

Definitely this.

Did a “ride in” type thing to the Day of Champions Silverstone MotoGP and Niall MacKenzie was leading us punters around in our wally bibs.

He was on his RD350 and had his son on his recently acquired 98 R1. Did notice rear indicators were on massive 4” stalks so either bought from wrong type of Yamaha or it’s from a foreign market where the indicators have to be miles apart from each other. Rear reflector wrong type as well - the Scots can to too tight sometimes! hehe

I had a lovely '98 Red / white one until recently. Echo the comments on here about being surprisingly comfy.

That big seat helps a lot. Love the instant grunt everywhere, especially low down where most modern stuff is neutered.

Just a bit boring sounding like most conventional inline fours.

Ok thanks for the information. I have the right indicators but in the long stalks then.

Agree totally with the above, they really are an awesome ride still.
Sounds good with an Akrapovic.

My one has been my only wheels for the last couple of months.

£3k should get you a 98/99 that has been relatively well looked after but expect to be buying slightly higher miles (i.e. 30-40k)

My 2p, having bought and sold a few of them. Buy the best you can afford, don't rush into the purchase just be patient and get whichever one has been looked after the best for your budget.

They are great bikes, but have a fair few niggles that plague them so make sure its one that has history with it.

The 5jj is very similar and doesn't command the premium that 4xv bikes do though apparently are quite different in terms of the way they ride but I'm not sure I buy it completely...

Get on the owners pages on facebook, lots of knowledge there - post up again when you buy one biggrin

Just looking at this picture and noted that I've had all of those in the same colour/model.

My 1999 R1 top picture with a Y2k seat unit fitted, below as it should be.

I’ve that one - it really does look good with that seat unit on it, problem is it then becomes non-original. I always think the 4XV light cluster looks a bit rubbish the way it angles up. It’s easily the worst (probably only) st looking bit of the bike.

Might take a look on eBay....
