What do you reckon it would be worth in bits?

1300 miles...

Rather than selling it complete. I don't mind the effort as long as it's worth my while!

Why would you want to break up a bike that has barely finished the running in period? It'll sel quick as it is.

Unless, of course, it's crashed. Or a stolen bike.

Just I stand to loose more money than I would like in a short space of time/miles!

You won't make money breaking it, you will end up stuck with lots of bits that no-one wants, I'm guessing you probably owe about £9k on it, I got £7600 for mine which was an 18 plate with 2300 miles as a px against a new bike, I was glad to be shot of the pile of ste!

Whats wrong with an mt-09. I've only ridden a standard one.

I thought if the st suspension was sorted that engine would make for a great bike.


Parting it out will definitely leave you with lots of bits noone wants or at least wont sell quickly.

I'm sure you could sell it privately for around what you owe on it as it is practically a new bike, you can just clear the finance over the phone when the buyer pays you for it

They are an ill handling POS, mine used to go into a significant weave when cracking on and no amount of adjustment would stop it doing it, they are far too harsh even with minimum settings the suspension cannot be sorted on the SP without spending another £500 on the forks, the brakes are also poor for what they are, the engine was fab but the wayward handling ruined my experience of it and there was no way I was spending £500 to have to sort handling issues on a brand new bike.

There seems to be two camps with MT09 based bikes - some say they are literally awful except for the engine, others are very happy with them but as Yamaha sold absolutely bucket loads of them its improbable to think they are as bad for everybody as some make out - Nobody mentions these issues in magazine reviews either.

I have an XSR900 myself, it used to shake when I had the forks preload too high - Advice I was given is its due to the dual rate springs, when you wind the preload down it essentially just shortens the lower rate portion of the spring and you ride on the stiffer rate and apparently when the front goes light under acceleration the front wheel will 'skim' bumps causing the shake at the bar.

Just fitted new, linear rate springs to the forks of the correct weight for me so will see how I get on, first track-day soon....

Im sure you put some time in on the suspension Jazoli - were spring rates all good for your weight etc? Think about fitting a steering damper? - Maybe you just pushed it harder than most will? People seem happy to do this kind of stuff to bikes like the s1000r though which is known to shake when pushing on.

Realistically its a budget bike, £7k for a sub 1500 mile bike - what else compares to it in this category - Surely £400 to sort the issues out is cheaper than losing a load of money on trade-in?

I tried everything with the suspension, it got into a proper weave and became really unstable when pushing on (probably quicker than most) speaking to another ex racer owner he found exactly the same problems with his and spent all day with a suspension expert at a track day trying to make it handle properly, no matter what they did the issue persisted, he sold his with 600 miles on it.

In contrast my Street Triple R was rock solid in 100+mph bends and I never felt for one moment I was in danger of being thrown off on it, unlike the MT, the MT's brakes were also rubbish compared to the STR's

I'd also disagree with your idea of budget, my SP was nine and a half grand and sold as a 'premium hyper naked' or something, I went for the SP as the suspension on the standard MT09 was crap, I felt short changed, my old two and a half grand STR was a far superior bike in pretty much every way, I think the SP was more marketing than substance as apart from the ohlins rear shock (which was plush) and the paint job there was no difference to the standard one, I regretted buying it a week or so after getting it but had to keep it 8 months as I'd have been in negative equity with it so it cost me £1/mile and I'd certainly not recommend one to anybody.

I've ridden three potential replacements for it recently:

Ducati Supersport S, Honda CB1000R...and the favorite so far... Z900RS. It was the Cafe version and I'm not sure I prefer the look or not, but it was great fun to ride!

What did you think of the Duc SSS? I do like the looks and perhaps fun for a bit of touring.

Second favourite!

The heat it generates - or can't get rid of - is a bit annoying. And the noise... not so much the running volume, but just the slightly fake sounding popping sounds. It might annoy my neighbours.

It looks and goes great but I'd probably have got the standard and spec the quick shifter. Needs a firm push down the gears though. Didn't seem to have an issue finding neutral as reported in various places.

I literaly sold a 2016 mt09 tracer with just under 12k miles for peanuts just to get rid of it.
Owned it for 3 years
Granted I had bought it at 2 weeks old for 7.2k,But basicly give it away for 4k just to spend 50% on the best fazer 1000 I could get with the rest on a few bike trips( the 1st of which is next weekend around galway with the lads)
The tracer was mental engine with the rest being cheap and bouncy and downrite dangerous at times
tbh although I have went older again I do not feel short changed at all.

Yes the tracer could go round bends and do most things prob better, But it just felt cold....once you get used to the engine the rest of the bike was just cheap and always felt it needed cash threw at at to make it better.

I took the Tracer 900 GT out last year and pretty much came to the same conclusion. A cheap bike made to a budget, I'd rather stick with my 12 year old Sprint ST 1050.

Thread revival. But I thought I'd share the amusement...

Two months and 2 hundred miles later... just had a trade in value from the place I bought it from. £6k. And apparently that's over book!

It's predicted to be worth £4700 in two years and on 15k at the end of the PCP!

Might as well ride the bloody thing. smile
