Riding this MT09 today got me thinking that the naked 'below 1000cc' sector should be a thriving one really. The largely crap roads we have and the ever increasing number of people in the country / vehicles on the road make the very fastest bikes pointless in many (not all!) ways and around 100 bhp is always going to be enough to have quite a lot of fun with. The lighter weight of these bikes always being a handy feature.
So what are the best bikes in this category? Let's say 3-5 years old and £5,000 budget.
The Z800 seems very heavy but otherwise a cracking bike. The Street Triple 675 is by all accounts a great machine. GSR750? Who knows about them? MT09? I like this one, it's a stolen recovered i got cheap with some damage but goes well for an 850 triple.
For me it's an important niche for the bike world and i can see myself getting something upright and a lot lighter and less powerful than my B King next year.

For me (and i know it's the go to answer on these pages) it has to be a street triple, my favourite being the last 675R, i actually sold my RS and went back to a '16 675r as i just find it more fun. Keen to try the new RS though as thats meant to have a much stronger midrange.

One i've not ridden but would like to is the 790 duke, they are meant to be a right laugh.

My favourite is the Street Triple. I've also ridden the Yamaha XSR900 (the retro-styled MT-09) and that was almost as good. The Suzuki GSXS750 was OK but not great. Nothing really wrong with it but it didn't stand out for anything – good or bad.

I loved my Monster 821. Did everything I wanted well and so was actually quicker point to point on it than on the MV.

Wish I’d never sold it.

I’ve got one if the new gen sv650 and really rate it.

It will feel slow if you ride it on big roads but if you have centre lined B roads near you it’s a lot of fun.

I don’t ride big roads anymore due to dash cams etc. And find it ideal.

It will still do a motorway trip as fast as you dare in comfort and excellent mpg.

The enjoyment levels on the roads I ride is far superior to a street RS I had before and just didn’t get on with.

Just for reference before that I did 20k miles on a Gsxr 750. Great bike on fast roads but I found myself going faster than was sensible too much of the time.

Bit niche and nearer 600 than 900 but I'm loving my Svartpilen 701. Lightweight with decent brakes/suspension with just enough go

I know bugger all but I'm very tempted by the KTM 950 / 990 because it's supposed to be fun at sensible speeds

CB650F?? Bling it up with a nice exhaust, sports rubber, bobbins, etc. Bombproof.

Great selection of bikes and every damn one appeals to me really, even the odd looking 701 with the 690 Duke engine! More and more i think the Street Triple 2013 model will tick most boxes, but the Monster is a good shout.

I agree - with a K-Tech shock and fork cartridge kit (K-Tech or Andreani), they are like a different bike. Standard suspension is terrible.

I rode a GSR750 and found it soulless. Engine lacked any character. Also a Z800 which I found similar and heavy

Bikes I have really enjoyed in this engine size was my old MV Dragster 800RR

Also the Triumph 675 which had a SC system fitted I found great fun! Nimble, light, manageable around town and sounded like a moto gp bike screaming it...which you could do loads as it wasn't all that quick

I think though tbh I am a bit harsh on the jap bikes, I just dont enjoy IL4s

Sorry, you realized late after selling it. I hope you get another soon since you love it.

Check out the Z900. It is much lighter than the Z800, something like 14 kilos lighter i think and the engine is loads of fun and super smooth. Kawasaki has also updated the 2020 model with led lights, digital dash and simple things like riding modes.

I like the look of the MV Brutale.

Actually, that is not quite true. They gove me a bot of a woody smile

675s look to be in your scope.

Can't see that being in the £5000 price budget for some time.
