As said, it is a span adjustor.

Surprised you haven't came across them before as they are a pretty common fitment, although they don't normally look as pretty

Now...in the vein of PH..why do bikes still have clutches? Forgetting the few notable exceptions.

I don't do much road riding so can't comment to much on road bikes, but certainly a clutch helps massively offroad. Although you can now get auto clutches for offroad bikes, although they are mostly seen as a bit of a cheat and a a slur on your riding skill of you use one, lol. If say that there probably just isn't the market for road bikes though, the mast majority of bikes will be used for fun only, and unlike cars, a proper manual with a clutch is the way to enjoyment rather than a flappy paddle diesel!

As someone who has just moved on from a twist and go to gears.

Gears are ace. Even in London traffic. So much more control and involvement in the actual art of riding.
