is it harder than a driving test
Depends on what experience you’ve already got. I found MOD1 very easy as that’s solely about bike control.
MOD2 was harder IMO, like a normal car test.
I think it's slightly easier - they're less picky about absolute perfection at all times, and just making sure you're safe.

I suppose if you did both cold you'd find the car test easier as it's less about concentration and physical control than biking.

Been watching a lot of videos on Youtube.

Do you really have to do that many lifesavers?

Congratulations OP on your pass.

Life saver each side when moving off, you even have to do it when pushing the bike!

I felt like I spent more time looking where I’ve been than where I was going ha.

So an update to this one. I got through my MOD 1 and have passed MOD 2 today. Battled wind and snow and got a couple of minors but I'm chuffed.
Nice one. I passed MOD2 last Friday. A great feeling!
Just a reminder that there's a sticky on this sub forum about the process from starting to ride to getting a bigger bike once passed. You won't both now need to post a "what bike?".

Both threads last updated 2013 and 2014. Great, thanks.

Just ignore the grumpy hole, this is good fodder for a "What bike" starting point though: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Don't worry I bought my Tiger 1050 last year so I not be posting.

Post as many threads as you can. It's not like it's exactly busy in here this time of year.

The miserable s are too thick to realise that they are not obliged to read them if they don't want to.

Mind you the time they spend moaning and correcting grammar on every thread, it's no wonder they/he wants to keep his work load down ...

Failed me mod1, stalling in parking space before getting into the testing area. The assessor told me the test has begun, ready to move off and stall. Defo nerves. So didn’t even move a metre. Does this seem harsh? Was fuming like

Yes, it seems harsh. Who hasn't stalled their bike? When I was learning, I initially struggled with U-turns and the figure of eight. Thankfully, perseverance is everything!

More pragmatically, stalling would be less of an issue if you were doing an advanced test. My advanced test examiner was more interested in how I recovered from mistakes – we’re all human – and more pragmatic than my L-test experience.

I'm really shocked at the stall fail. For my Mod 1 it had been pouring down. Only 2 tests went ahead. I had to wait 10 more minutes for them to decide whether to postpone. Anyway I got on the bike, put the stand up and went to set off. Stall. Stand was still down. The noise of the clunk was in fact the stand going back down. The wetness and the rubber part of my boot meant it slipped. I noticed it, started again, passed MOD1. We asked the examiner and because I hadn't setoff, nor made the bike dangerous and knew the mistake it wasn't even a minor. You've been really hard done to

Fail for a stall once you have started moving doesn’t seem excessively harsh. It can lead to a tricky situation if the vehicle behind is expecting you to keep accelerating, or if you do it on a turn. Everyone does it sometimes, just don’t do it on a test.

The rain was absolutely bouncing during my Mod1, my previous date had been cancelled due to ice, the instructor and examiner talked outside for ages before deciding to go ahead, i was soaked through from the ride there, pretty pissed off, didn't care if i failed or passed just wanted to get home and dried out, i blitzed through it in less than five minutes and passed. Went on to fail Mod2 though.

Regarding the stalling fail, that seems harsh, or did he wait ages on you restarting the bike ?, a stall after you pass and are out on the road yourself with a big bike can be a problem (as someone has mentioned), it could cause you to be rear ended by a car driver behind who expects you to be gone (as you are on a bike), especially if they are looking at a roundabout or junction and see a gap. I was stalling my GSXR when i first started as i was scared to give it too much throttle but quickly cured it with practice.

I think you've been hard done to as well, stalled on my Mod 1 at the start of the slow ride, was turning the air blue inside my helmet because I was convinced I'd failed on the spot for putting my foot down but the examiner just told me to calm down and she started the slow ride again.
Flew through the remainder of the test thinking I'd failed anyway, could have almost kissed her when she said I'd passed, apparently because I didn't lose control of the bike and still did all my checks.

I think I was extra nervous because we were watching the previous tests (who both failed) and our instructor said we better get some more practice quick before the test as he'd never seen anyone walk so slowly for the slow ride, "as if she was leading a funeral".frown

That's very odd - I had a student who stalled after his E stop last week. The Examiner didn't even give him a rider fault (ie minor).

Are you sure there was nothing else to it - did you nearly drop the bike as a result of the stall or something? If the bike isn't under full control, that can be a serious fault/fail?

Regardless - the examiners are Godlike (or think they are)... st happens ... So move on and best of luck next time.

I passed today, with a clean sheet, at my third attempt.

First fail was emergency stop: first run clocked 47kmh. Second run 58kmh but completely forgot to apply front brake so took a looooong time to stop.

Second fail: put a foot down in the figure-8s.

Onwards and upwards to Mod2!

That is savage - I presume you went on to take the test not knowing you failed. How did rest of it go?

I stalled on the low speed walk, aced the rest and he failed me on first MOD 1attempt.

Having passed Mod 1 (at the third attempt) on Tuesday 14/09 I passed Mod 2 on Thursday 16/09.

On Saturday 18/09 I had a test ride on a BMW G310R and decided that it was the bike I wanted. I collected my new bike yesterday (25/09j and rode home along quiet back roads while I got used to it. With a 6k rev limit for the first 300k/186 miles (roughly the first tankful of fuel) top speed is about 60mph.

Having determined that it will actually fit in the garage, behind the MR2, I waited for the light to fade before heading out on my first motorbike ride in darkness to see how good the headlight is. Happily I can report that the LED headlight works really well, as do the heated grips I had fitted by the dealer.
