I live in an industrial city, you wouldn't want to come here for a holiday, large council estates, loads of vans, buses, lorries, its hardly the rolling green fields of West Sussex. Our Mayor introduced a 20mph limit in most of the city, so you have to be constantly, "on the ball", with speed, as it changes everywhere (my dad had a speeding ticket for 24 in a 20 and had to go on a course)

What's this got to do with loud exhausts?

I think that loud exhausts are totally acceptable, at the right time in the right place, far far more antisocial is speed. Previously mentioned above is 50-60 in a 30, I think he's right ..... as stated I drive like a 90yo, everyone leaves me alone.

I don't rev the bike in my garden at any time, last night about 22:00 I lowered my little Makita Builders Radio in the garden because I didn't want to disturb anyone. I regularly ride past, "sitting", Police at 20 in a 20, they got nothing to do other than look at what's passing, never been stopped. I bet if I went past at 50, there would be blue flashing lights ....

Speed is far more antisocial than noise .....
Nice prologue. Yet - you deem it absolutely fine to make a fking racket where the proverbial “we” live?

Many of us have said that we do not like or want loud exhausts on anything. That certainly extends to the HDs
At least sports bike fk off out of the vicinity a before long.

Saying your opposition is to speed is all caring and cuddly, but a HD at slow speeds us almost worse- especially when small dick chimps feel it is totally necessary to give random twists of the throttle, clutch in, for the noise or some bullst.
fking childish (for the third time in one thread)

So OP, if you revel in living in some kind of Robocop industrial setting. Please stay there an d make as much noise as you want and stay the fk away from the countryside.

Stop trying to put the in countryside in other words.

Does not need to hear exhausts.

Ahhhh but *that's* different. I'm with the op on this (albeit not a biker), I like loud pipes - and at various points mine are obscenely LOUD. Driving through towns (20/30 mph) it's a decent rumble - 3-4k revs and it's like God clearing his throat, start-up is noisy (though I do drop it into gear asap which brings the anti-social factor down massively.

My p.o.v? Like rock 'n' roll (it) ain't noise pollution. I like hearing harleys, super bikes less so and fart cans not at all - BUT I'd not want to ban them and it does concern me the massive up-tic in intolerant aholes:
Kids playing? Too noisy
Dog barking? Too noisy
Lawn mowing? Too noisy
BBQ & drinks? Too noisy

Which probably made it sound pretty crap tbh. Still, like the Harley, all noise.

Bikes or cars, for me it's more to do with the quality of the sound rather than the volume. A boring engine with loud pipes is just boring and loud. But e.g. an old Vincent or a 90s Ducati sounds wonderful without needing to be oppressively loud.

Love the sound of a loud motorbike being worked hard. My bike (harley) has no baffles but I keep the revs low and stick to the speed limit through towns so the noise isn't too offensive. It sounds utterly orgasmic when I open it up as well, get it revving up to 5k (dont laugh) and it never ceases to put a smile on my face.

The mumsnetters on here would be surprised actually how many pedestrians give me a nod when I'm going through villages. Even got a smile of a cyclist yesterday.

Who are the ones being hysterically offended? People who don’t enjoy motorbikes which are stupidly loud or people who don’t like being told that their bikes are stupidly loud?

I guarantee you 90% of people are mentally giving you the coffee beans. It may sound orgasmic to you but you having an orgasm in public isnt really something that onlookers enjoy,

The thread seems to have polarized opinions.

I like the sound of interesting engines. But I decided a few years ago that I prefer to keep my bikes quieter to avoid attention. I'm not judging those who go louder, I get it, I like the noise. Personally, I value knowing I'm avoiding attention and not pissing anyone off. Each to their own.

And if bikes get banned thanks to twunts with noisy exhausts will that make you happy because you are annoying even more people?

Look what's happening in Germany. A proposal to ban all IC bikes from the roads on Sundays just because some riders think it's clever to make a ridiculous din.

Clearly both...
