Just found this thread - a great bike and interested to follow this as I've always fancied a BB too.

Loving the Ute btw - many PistonHeads points awarded for that alone.

Looks like a great project, not too bad at all! Does it run alright?

Its been sat unused for a few years, and due to the state of the tank I am going to wait until the new one is fitted and a full service is completed before trying to start it thumbup

Have you considered a tank liner instead? Quite cheap and relatively straight-forward. smile

I had considered it, but thought I would try and get a good tank as it would probably be a better long term solution. I might try and derust the old one and sell it on to claw some money back.

I had a little play with the bike after work today, replaced the screen and blue bolts. Much better smile

I've still not even given it a clean yet so I'm sure it will polish up really well

The new tank also arrived, although that will have to wait until the weekend

Lovely ! Had a similar blue one back in 2000. Did about 75k+ miles on it. Only annoyances were the regulator/rectifiers went, the original at 30k miles and a Jaws one which was supposed to solve the problem which also blew after exactly 30k miles. Both times of course on a foreign holiday. Anyways, best of luck with her !

Adding a computer CPU fan to the top of the reg/rec, wired into an ignition switched feed (make sure it's a 12v not a 5v fan!!!) can help reduce failures.

A lot of bike for £1000. Will certainly be a change of pace from the Enfield!

Had one in the mid-2000s. Did a trackday at Brands, my highest top speed on the road and a euro-tour involving snow on the Furka pass and trying to ride to London from Munich in one day (didn't happen as too much traffic and I was too tired from having been at the Oktoberfest).

Great bike.

If you're concerned about reg/rec failure you could install a voltmeter and/or an overcharge/undercharge warning light, and maybe carry a spare. A bit of checking/rewiring might help, as well.

You can fit a yamaha r1/r6 reg rec which is a much better unit than the Honda one, much larger
The only thing you have to do is swap the live and earth wires over
S/h mine was about £15 on evilbay

Is the R/R problem the same as the VFRs of the same era?
If so I fitted an SH847 to my VFR and it's been perfect.

Very under rated bike in my opinion.

Had a couple of good rides on one, plenty fast enough in the day, and Honda reliability built in....

Nice Ute btw....

This was the bike with the best name. Super Blackbird XX.
Typical honda. Suzuki and Kawasaki quickly made faster bikes but Honda kept their heads and continued to make a bike you would enjoy riding
and owning rather than blathering about and clocking half the mileage.

... until Honda dropped it and replaced it with .... nothing!!!

They are still great bikes that can be used every day and for every (on road) purpose. On the road they will still be quicker than most other bikes while still being comfortable and fun.

Firestorm. Another great name. Didn't really live up to the name but I would have one if it didn't do 20mpg.
