Hi all I am a long time lurker in this corner of Pistonheads and have just completed my CBT. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would and I am now going to complete the DAS.

A few newbie questions if I may. How long on average does it take to pass your Mod 1 & 2? I've read that Mod 1 tends to be the harder of the two but as there is only a couple of additional bits over CBT I am not too worried about this. Also, is it worth having a 125 whilst doing DAS training? I'm in two minds about this with the price of 125's at the moment. This weekends weather doesn't help, I'd love to be out there getting some miles under my belt.

Any advice gratefully received and hopefully in the fullness of time I will be able to contribute to this great forum as well.

Cheers

I’ve recently passed my DAS; I had a 125 over the winter months, after doing my CBT. The main reason was due to lockdown I couldn’t book my DAS until the spring and didn’t want to go too long without riding a bike.
So having a 125 worked for me, due to circumstances, but you don’t have to. If you feel comfortable just go straight to DAS, have some training as well, and you’ll be fine.
BTW I enjoyed it! Neither of the modules should worry you too much
Edit for spelling

Thanks. I feel comfortable heading straight to DAS and the instructor on the CBT said he wouldn't have any concerns on taking us out on a big bike straight away either so that was reassuring.

How long did it take you to complete the DAS?

Congrats on the CBT and deciding to take up the DAS.
I think at the moment the biggest limiting factor for you will be availability of tests as a lot of places are backlogged for several months. It may be worth speaking to schools in your area and see what the availability is, if you're going to have to wait a while for the DAS then you may as well grab a cheap 125 to yomp about on for a few months - especially with summer nearly here - not only will it give you some on road experience but also give you a chance to get out and about at a fairly nice time of year.

It would be easier to ask the training school what period they do das over. Mine was 3 days including mod 1. Then back the next week for half a day training and mod2. Whole thing was a fortnight start to finish.

I'm a few weeks ahead of you at the moment, I passed my CBT about 6 weeks ago and currently doing DAS training and looking at booking a Mod 1 very soon. Rode for about 4 weeks on CBT before starting DAS

Issue at the moment is the availability of Mod 1 and 2 tests, they are a rare beast indeed depending where you are in the country. They have no Mod 1 tests available in Nottingham at the moment until early September. Spoke to the school I'm training with though and they reckon will get me a cancellation alot sooner than then (Hopefully!)

I did get alittle 125 to run around and get some practise on, I'm very glad I did! Can enjoy the weather (Long as don't want to go over 70mph) and can practise all the recommendations that my instructor suggests in my own time, means lessons are progressing quickly.

Have done about 3 hours so far on an MT07, made me more determined than ever to pass, completely different animal and had a grin on my face more than a few times.

Mod 1 is seems fairly easy once you've been taught the techniques, I also found the maneuvers ALOT easier on a bigger bike as opposed to a 125.

Get it done as soon as you can, won't regret it.

I completed my CBT and DAS in around 6 weeks in 2019 and that was having never ridden a motorbike before.

Mod 1 was fairly easy but it’s easy to make a slip up I actually failed my first Mod 2 but got a cancellation and passed a week later.

None of it is too difficult IMO and providing you can get test dates you can complete it pretty quick.

I wouldn’t bother with a 125 if you intend to pass ASAP just spend your money on lessons and get through your test. I passed and jumped on a 2001 Honda CBR 600 which was perfect.

Thanks for all the responses. The school I did my CBT with reckon they are working on a 6 week wait for tests at the moment so not too bad. I have already done my theory and hazard perception so bo need to worry about getting that in. My biggest constraint will be time away from work but I reckon I can get around that.

I'd say Mod1 is way harder than a CBT, completely different level of accuracy required.

I did 2-3h lessons once a week for 4-5 weeks to get done with Mod1+2

After nearly 40 years since I passed my car test I have started learning to ride a motorcycle. I did my CBT 10/05/21 on a Yamaha MT-07, and passed the theory test 14/05/21. Tomorrow (31/05) I have a days training, again on the MT-07. I will decide, with my instructor, whether I need more training, or if I am ready to book the Mod 1.

Took me about a month start to finish having passed a couple of weeks ago. The issue where I live is the schools being so busy there isn't enough instructors/ bikes to keep up with demand rather than no test slots.

It's been a very frustrating process, having started back in september and kept getting caught up in the lockdowns with training repeatedly cancelled. I even bought and sold a bike I didn't ride, now have a Street Triple which I love.

I'm starting my motorbike adventure with CBT in 2 weeks time. I would like to do DAS straight after that. Do you think it is worth buying 125cc just for a month or so for practice?

For a month probably not, if you great at finding a bargain and selling then maybe. Due to Covid I had a 125cc for six month, whilst struggling for tests and I was bored in lockdown. Perhaps spending money on an extra session (or few if your impatient) more training would be better value and less hassle.

I wonder if they would let you rent a 125 for the day?

My instructor is renting me a 125 by the day so I can get some practice. I can do three days by myself for the price of a day with him shouting in my ear while I faff about on a Yamaha MT-07. I mostly know what I’m doing wrong, I just need to practice more. I had a great day yesterday and have booked another day next Saturday. If it goes well I will discuss booking Mod 1 with him.

It's great idea, but I suspect that my instructor would rather charge me for a day of training than rent one of his bikes.

I’m in Guildford; he did suggest I could hire one from somewhere in Woking before offering me the use of one of his 125s. Availability is dependent on him not needing it for tuition that day but so far it’s working well for me and he’s got some money coming in for a bike that would otherwise not be earning him anything.

Did it help to have some practice on 125? Would you feel as confident doing Mod1 & Mod2 without that practice?
I know that everyone is different, but would like to hear from your perspective.

I guess that is win win situation for both sides. I'm in east midlands and it seems like most of the places I have contacted have a very busy schedule as it is hard to find a place to do CBT.
