I was pondering getting another 1,000 miles out of the Metzeler Z8 tyres on my bike. Only I just noticed the rear has gone flat. Pumped it but cannot find the puncture anywhere.

The candidate tyres are:
Michelin Road 5 (aka Pilot Road 5).
Metzeler Roadtec 01

The main criteria are:
Good wet weather grip, good cold weather/winter grip.
Good mileage; won't square off fast with regular trips down motorways.
Good puncture resistance, if there is even any difference between tyres.

Would be interested to hear about the Metzeler Roadtec 01 in particular. It gets good reviews, eg

Don't know much on the Metz but always read good things on the Michelin and my power rs+ at least when new and fresh gripped well in the wet and cold

I couldn't tell you anything about the Metzelers but the Road 5s are great tyres. I've had a few sets and covered around 30,000 on them in all sorts of conditions. By far the best tyres I've had for commuting.

I put SE01 on my Fireblade to tour Scotland. They squared off real quick. I had little to no confidence in them. At Cadwell I had a couple of lurid slides a few months later.

By contrast, Supercorsas never square off and I've never had any confidence issues.

My son had Pilot Road 5 on his CBR500R. They were excellent.

Metzeler were standard fit on my bike from new- and I have always replaced with Metzeler ever since; going through Roadtec; Sportec and Racetec in various guises.

I have always found them reliably stable in the wet; great during quickish road use and managed a fair few quick (relatively speaking!) laps without binning anything.......
Sportec tended to offer the best balance of performance vs longevity.

There was a sponsored thread on here with Metzeler supplying tyres to a PH'r for feedback - what happened there??

I’ve just swapped the OEM Metzeler Z8s for Michelin Road 5s on my BMW R1250R.

I’ve done a couple of hundred miles and I’m very happy so far…

For the Road 5s, do you want the Road 5 GT version with the heavier sidewall if it is going on a touring bike?

Probably best to email Michelin customer service with details of the bike and ask them.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I wonder if different makes of tyres suit different bikes. I loved Metzelers especially Racetecs on my CBR600 but they are nowhere near as nice on my Speed Triple for some reason.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

Have metzeler sportec m7rr's on a 996, they have lasted really well, dont square off, loads of grip in wet and dry - will be replacing with m9rr (latest iteration) when its time

I've done over 50,000 miles on the Road 5s. A set would last me around 7500 miles (K1300S and H2 SX). Great grip in both dry and wet weather and good grip from cold. Enough grip and feel to allow for some spirited road use.

I tried a set of Roadtec 01s on the K1300S. More feel and slightly better wet weather grip. They lasted about 7000 miles but started to noticeably white line after about 2000 miles. (The Road 5s didn't white line until about 6000 miles.)

As COVID has removed my need to commute I'm currently trying a set of Roadtec 01s on the H2 SX. Haff way around a sometimes wet, sometimes dry NC500, after 450 miles of motorway and fun roads to get here, I can say I'm pretty happy with them.

My new to me bike has Roadtec 01's fitted and I'm impressed, they give confidence in wet or dry and perform well when cold. I haven't tried PR5's, used to swear by PR2's though; the Bandit 1250 I had for a day recently had Pirelli GT's on and when the Metzelers need replacing I reckon it'll be a choice between Angel GT2's, PR5's and Roadtec 01 SE's.

Sorry, not much help but I don't think you'll make a bad choice either way.

Road 5GT’s here on my Sprint.

I put the ‘touring’ version on because it’s a heavy bike and I normally carry a pillion.

Never had a problem with them and I’d definitely buy them again.

Most of my bikes have some sort of Metzeler on them, they really seem to work for me.

I currently have M5, M7 and Z8 from their range.

Couldn't get on with Michelin at all.. never have.

Would be really interested in the report from the 01s!

My M7 rear tyre on the H2 SX is almost done after 900 odd miles... half of which was on the NC500 too..

I have been getting used to the bike, so probably a bit more brutal on the throttle than usual to be fair...

I had Metzelers on my Honda VRX and my Triumph Thruxton, and I thought they were dreadful on both bikes. The Honda received Bridgestones and the Triumph Avon Roadriders, both of which vastly improved them.

Recently put road pilot 5's on my Hayabusa. Hated them for the 1st hundred miles but they are now absoluteley fantastic. So much better than the previous Battlaxes.

Always been a fan of Metz/Pirelli, using MEZ1 or Dragon Corsa back in the day. Currently using the Metz Sportec which is performing well. Not really tried it extensively in the wet, but it's lasting well - the rear is starting to show signs of squaring off at around 1850 miles.
